2004 Texas State Knife & Hawk Championships

(First let me apologize for the quality of these pictures. My scanner is down and I used an old one I had sitting around to get these into my pc. My apologies to everyone. Especially those in the pictures and involved in the events.)

Despite the rains the Texas State Knife and Hawk Championships were held as scheduled, April 24th and 25th, with a record number of throwers participating. Throwers from across Texas and four other states did not let the rains dampen their spirits or skills as 43 of some of the top throwers in the country competed for the Texas State Championship.

The Cedar Creek Knife and Hawk Club hosted the event for the 4th year in Malakoff. Chuck Weems, President of the Club and Coordinator of the event, said, "Everything went very well despite the weather. All of the competitors hung in there even though the mud was getting deep walking back and forth to the throwing blocks, but we got some hay donated to put down over it."

"Sunday we moved the competition to some drier ground and everyone had a great time. The worst thing was that the public did not get to see some great throwing by some world class throwers. However, by noon on Sunday, the sun came out and we had a good turn out of folks watching the event and were there for the awards ceremony."

This years Men's State Champion was Pat Minter from Shelby, Alabama. Pat is now a two time state winner, winning in 2001 and again in 2004. Women's State Champion was Erica Weems from Malakoff, TX. She is now a three time state champion winning in 2001, 2003 and 2004. We had 27 Professional, 11 Amateur and 4 Junior throwers.

Weems said this tops last years numbers by 11 competitors. There were a total of $4000 in cash and about $1000 in prizes, making this the largest event of its kind in the country. There were also eight traders with various trade goods from the early 1800's that had a successful weekend, also despite the rains. Many of the traders and competitors came in as early as Thursday and stayed until Monday, so they were able to visit and tour part of the community. Weems reports this was all possible because of the great support of the community and the fine businesses and individuals who contributed cash donations and their time to make this event a big success.

A big thank you to the Malakoff City Park Service for having the park in such great shape! Everyone thinks this is a great place to hold the event. Also thanks to the Rotary Club of Malakoff for their sponsorship of the insurance coverage during the event. Weems also would like to thank the members of the club who worked so hard all weekend to keep things running smoothly. The event just keeps getting bigger every year and we look forward to hosting it again in 2005.
