Lots of rain and storms for the past couple weeks but its got to end eventually! One very cool thing that just happened was I was contacted by a reporter from the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel. The largest newspaper in Milwaukee. She wanted to come by and learn about the sport and also wanted to try her hand at throwing! We set up the time and she came by for about an hour. It was a great time for both of us (I think :-) I always enjoy teaching someone how to throw. When they stick a solid THUNK you can just see the satisfaction in their face! I was also very excited because the paper has quite a few subscribers (250,000 a day) so there could be a few more throwers popping out of the woodwork in Milwaukee soon!!! A big thanks to Laura Steel for the interview! (Cool last name eh? :-) UPCOMING EVENTS THE CHUCKER 2004 This event will be hosted by Carl & Marilyn Geddes in San Diego, CA on July 31, 2004. All of the San Diego Chuckers will be in attendance plus other knife throwers from throughout the State, and maybe the WORLD! GUEST COLUMN THINGS NOT TO DO WITH YOUR NEW THROWING AXE By Doug Allen There it was, that long box under the Christmas tree. I new what it was. It was the only thing I asked Santa for... A new Firestone SportAxe! As a Viking buff, I couldn't wait! This was the modern version of the Nordic Bearded Axe, used in both war and shipbuilding. Well I was right, that's what it was, and I couldn't wait to throw it! Now think back to when you were a kid, (I'm a grandfather now), when you got your first BB gun. It was cold outside and Dad said you'll have to wait. You went down to the basement and figured who'd know if you popped off a few shots. Three light bulbs and a window later you knew you were in deep trouble and you might not see the next sunrise. Well, things are so different now :) I went to the basement just to try it out, I wasn't going to throw much... RIGHT!!! So anyway, here is a list of some of the things I've learned since I got my Firestone SportAxe: 1) Don't throw in the basement unless you plan to put new insulation on your steam pipes. 2) Did you know you can split a 6X6 lolly column with one well placed throw??? 3) I now know how brittle a sewage pipe is. 4) OK so now I've got this really cool looking axe, let's put some streamers and feathers on it! But wait, now I have to see if it affects the flight. (You know I really did like my wifes cat.) I had no idea he could jump that high? 5) Finally my wife said enough is enough! Go outside, cold or not. And that's when I learned you don't throw at the moment your neighbor tells his dog to fetch. The hound has a permanent grin now, and will never fetch a duck again. 6) Next I moved to the garage, I have a range set up there with heavier targets. But did I move my wifes car? Nope. After all I was getting good and I had left the keys all the way in the house. I'll replace the head light next week, but I don't know what to tell her about the four inch slash in the upholstery, (the window was open!). 7) About this time the grandsons show up. 6 year old twins. Now they know the safety rules, because I'm teaching them how to throw knives and darts. I told them this was not an Indian tomahawk. I went inside to warm up. Not for long. I heard a "whoop" and ran outside to see Sebastian tied to a tree and Duncan doing a war dance! I told my daughter not to worry... Sebastian's hair would grow back, eventually. 8) Well I learned my lesson. I bundled up and went for a walk in the woods. How was I to know that long leaf yellow pine was endangered? I tried to explain I wasn't trying to chop down the tree, just throw a battle axe at it. The forest ranger said that would reduce the fine to $1000... and then he took my cool axe. OK it's almost all made up :) But I did get a Firestone SportAxe for Christmas and it is fantastic!!! While I didn't really wreak the havoc above, I did discover that it can split a 6" thick tree round with one well placed throw... And there went my basement target. It's raining now and I'm sanding the nicks out of the handle. You know... suddenly everything looks like a target. Here kitty, kitty :) Article Contributed by: Doug Allen www.seadogknives.com To see pics and learn more details about the first axe that looks as great as it throws, check out the Firestone SportAxe: http://www.throwzini.com/firestone_axe.html AOL USERS LINK ============================================= 3.
