1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello Metal Slingers!

The snow has been melting quite a bit here in Wisconsin. I should be out throwing soon if the weather keeps cooperating, but those are 2 words you normally don't hear in the same sentence... "weather" and "cooperating" :-)

Before we get to the good stuff this time, I've got to mention something. The way I see it, the most important part of my job is spreading the word about our sport. The more people I can get to try and throw a knife the better. I know they won't all get as hooked as some of us are but if you happen to see a spark light in someones eyes as they stick their first knife... you know you've just given them a gift that could possibly last a lifetime.

So anyway, I've taught quite a few people to throw and found that its mostly about instruction. You just have to explain the basics of throwing, in a way that the person can understand and remember.

Telling a person not to snap their wrist may not get them to stop. It feels so natural when you're just starting out, but if you tell the person to concentrate more on following through, that may be easier for them to accomplish. On to the point...

World Champion Knife Thrower, The Great Throwdini (David R. Adamovich) created an instructional video about our sport that covers EVERYTHING you can imagine! There are slow motion sequences of competition knife, axe and hawk throwing plus practice drills and tons of other cool things! As a knife thrower The Great Throwdini will teach you how to throw knives like a professional, whether your interest is recreational knife throwing or competition throwing.

So my advice to you is that if you want to learn how to throw or how to become a better thrower, you should check out David's video. From beginners to experts, there's something in it for everyone.

Well, I'm going to go see if anymore snow is gone from my target range. Keep your fingers crossed and I'll talk to you all soon!

Keep the pointy end down range!!! :-)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

LOOSE TOMAHAWK HEADS
by Mike Moulder

I've often heard people ask how to keep their tomahawk head from coming loose when I throw? I have heard many answers from super glue or epoxy to wedges. The answer I get most often from people who've been throwing them for years is simply, you don't.

Tomahawk heads aren't usually affixed to the handle so that the force that would otherwise break the handle is spent when the head loosens. A good hawk handle is thicker above the head so that it won't fly off, and the eye (the part of the head that the handle goes through) is wider at the top than at the bottom of the head.

This means that simply by throwing the hawk your head will tend to tighten. You can also tap the hawk (head down) on a piece of wood to tighten it. I usually give mine a good thump on my log round when it loosens.

This is not to say that you can't use super glue or other means to keep the head in place better, just be ready to replace the handle more often. So the next time you throw your hawk and the head comes loose, think "Whew, glad it came loose instead of breaking the handle."

4. MOOSE TRAX OPEN THROW IN MAINE
by Jack Harrill

Hello from Maine,

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Moose Trax Open Throw will be held in Brighton, Maine on July 17th, 2004. This will be a tournament that will include the following events:

1. Range throwing (1/2 to 2 turns)
2. Woods Walk (if you haven't done this you haven't lived)
3. Combat/Ambush course
4. The famous "Anything Goes - Downrange" event

There will be prizes and lots of great throwers. I am always dubious about the throwing but the folks are always great.

The event is located in the mountains of Maine. The site is absolutely fantastic. This will be the second Open Throw. The first event was won by Joe Darrah and his bevy of bayonets.

For this event you will need the following items. Sense of adventure, sense of humor, sense. It would be helpful if you bring anything that you own that can be thrown and stuck in a target. You never know, you might just need that 36" circular saw blade that you have had kicking around in the garage.

There are extra points for throwing something like that (if it sticks and you hit the target that is 40 yards away). Other than that, it might be really tiring to carry it with you.
