1. WHAT'S NEW

No Mo' Sno'... I can't wait to throw!!!

Well I just checked outside my window and it didn't work. Still snow on the ground, on the side of the garage... and in front of the targets.

But there is hope! I think I can see the top of a log! I'm not quite sure though so I'll have to wait for some warmer days to get here to melt some more of that evil white stuff but I'll keep checking :-)

UPCOMING EVENTS
There are two events coming up very soon that I highly recommend checking out.

2004 WWAC/PKT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The first is the 8th Annual WWAC/Pacific Knife Throwers Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its the first week in March and they even have a new specialty event this year called the "Quick Draw" where throwers will pair off and see who can draw a knife from a sheath and stick it in an 8 inch target first!

For more info on this event, and all the specialty challenges that will also be taking place, just go to our home page:

2. GUEST COLUMN:

WEATHER EXTREMES
by Chuck Fogarty

Looking thru some pictures a few days ago I came across some of both Winter and Summer throwing. I thought it might be interesting to share...

(There are pictures that go along with each of these descriptions. Just read to the end to find out how to view them.)

The 1st picture is of a windsurfing board, a great target, located at my friends home in Stuart Florida. This was the first year he owned the home so he didn't have a target for me when my wife and I arrived for our usual February visit to Florida.

After some discussion about the difficulty of finding tree rounds down there he remembered a worn out windsurfing board under his pier. We nailed it to 2 trees in his yard and it was a wonderful target. The outside was a heavy vinyl and the inside a very dense kapok, almost like wood. It held up so well it lasted for the 2 weeks we were there before it was finally destroyed.

The next few pictures were made a year later when again he didn't have a target for me. After suffering thru a day of long lasting silences on my part we went to his garage and found some plywood, 2 by 4's and some heavy insulation sheets. This made a very nice target for my knives, hawks and even my Cold steel torpedoes.

The ambience of course was great, the pictures of me throwing on his beach were from the 12 and 18 foot distance. These pictures were taken when the tide was out.

When the tide was in I would have to throw standing on the rocks, which were covered with water. I lost a knife overnight but the friendly tide left it there for me in the morning.

The last 2 pictures are of my wife and I throwing the atlatl after several inches of snow had blanketed the ground. It is really difficult to throw knives when the temp dips down into the 20s or lower, especially when there is lots of snow on the ground.

You need layers of sweat shirts, gloves and much effort is required to sweep and shovel the area clear of snow. Your fingers soon ache with the cold as do your toes.

Enter the atl atl. As you can see the atlatl is a throwing stick made with a spur on the end that hooks into the end of the arrow, or dart. You get 2 to 3 times the distance and striking power because of the atlatl and I can throw the dart to a maximum of 200 feet.

It's really great to throw the atlatl in the cold weather and I have invented a technique that really helps. You wear a glove on your left hand and keep your right hand in your pocket (or vice versa) do all the carrying and picking up of darts with your left hand and just use your right for throwing. It works pretty well.

You can of course throw the atlatl in the Summer as well but knife throwers sometimes find it difficult to get away from the knives and tomahawks.

The atlatl has gotten very popular and there are lots of full time throwers. I see the record for an atlatl throw is over 800 feet. This seems impossible to me but they use much longer atlatls and longer and even springier darts.

See you can throw all Winter long!

4. A SIMPLE WAY TO MARK YOUR DISTANCES
by Ed Imperatore

For my distance lines I use 2 tent spikes and a length of clothes line measured, marked and banged flat across the ground.

This makes great semi permanent lines that you won't trip over. You can even cut the grass right over them if its pulled tightly enough.
