Throwing in Texas was faantastic! :-))) For all of you that are "new" to the "Throwzini" newsletter, for the past few issues I've been trying to pump up our readers about some of the newest clubs and tournaments being held in the United States... They are the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame, the International Knife Thrower's Hall of Fame Association, and the Central US Knife Throwing Championships. (All located in Austin, TX.) Dr. Mike Bainton of South Austin Karate put all of these together with the help of some very dedicated folks (Audrey West and Mike Snowden to name a couple). They held their events from October 11-13th, 2003 and I was so lucky to be able to take part in it! We'll cover these topics a bit more (like the event!) and we'll also go over the clubs in future issues. Today in our "Feature Article" we have Part 1 of Joe Darrah's observations of what took place so be sure to keep reading! GUEST COLUMN: WALKING WITH LEGENDS - PART 1 by Joe Darrah I landed in Austin on Oct. 10th rented a car and got down to the Ba Ki Do studio as fast as almost legally possible. When I stepped out of the car I was greeted by Mr. Dan Dennehy (legendary knifemaker and one of the original founding members of the knifemakers guild) and Mike (Ironpost) Kolisch one of the greatest Mountain Men in Colorado. That in itself would have been worth going to "the throw" for, but as I was to learn it was only the beginning. Mr. Bob Karp (Master of The Blade) was also there when I arrived, The Great Thowdini, aka Rev. Dr. David Adamovich (a fantastic thrower and renowned impalement artist) and John Bailey (AKA Bahama John) also an impalement and whip artist, and The Great Throwzini (Scott (Alamo) Gracia) the young man responsible for the Great Throwzini Web site where so many newcomers learn of our sport and contact us. It felt as if all these great people were long lost friends as I introduced myself to the one's I didn't know and gave hug's and good wishes to all that I had met before. This was the start of something big and there was an excitement in the air that was perceptible even to the non throwers in attendance. Later that day Mr. Gil Hibben (knifemaker extraordinare) and Mr. Pat (The Machine) Minter as well as Chuck (Walking Eagle) Weems arrived, I had never been in such esteemed company in one venue before and was in awe of the caliber of throwers as well as impressed with the history of many of these great legends. The next day had Roy (Moses) Neal come in for the competition and as was expected, Jim (Grey Dog) Tanner and Sensei Mike (Cinch) Bainton were there and definitely in the running for top honors. I couldn't wait for the tournament to start but there was to be an awards ceremony for some of these great people to be inducted into The International Knife Throwers Hall Of Fame that evening so it was back to the hotel to get dressed up and return for the festivities! We got to the dinner a bit early and were rubbing elbows with everyone there and having a wonderful time just getting to know a bit more about each other. I was seated with Gil Hibben and Pat Minter two of the greatest guy's you will ever meet and their lovely wives. My wife was finally able to attend this event with me and we had plans to stay a few extra days. After a fantastic dinner and demonstrations from Team Bakido, the announcements and ceremony got under way with Sensei Mike Bainton turning over the job of MC to Rick Lemberg who is the president of the PKT (Pacific Knife Throwers) as well as a heck of a competitor, business man and apparently MC! The awards were ready to be given out and you would have thought Rick had studied each individual persons history as he seemed to know their life story. The room seemed to have static electricity in it as the first time in the history of the sport of Knife Throwing some people who helped contribute to the sport in some way would be recognized by their peers and fans! Part 2 continued in our next newsletter! Article Contributed by Joe Darrah (aka Brokenfeather) Pennsylvania brknfthr@aol.com To see the folks who were inducted into the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame, and to see some great pictures from the Banquet after the awards were handed out, just visit the Hall of Fame web site at: http://www.knifethrowershalloffame.com/ AOL USERS LINK Once you're there you can click on links that are on the left side of the page and that will take you to all of the info!
