1. WHAT'S NEW

Hi Folks!

Well its been raining on and off for the past couple days so I've been throwing a little here and a little there, but only when the weather allows.

For the past couple weeks my buddy Dave Fettig and I have been trying to practice as often as possible for the upcoming event in Austin, TX (The 2nd Annual 2003 Central US Knife Championships!) I suppose we should have started practicing months ago since the event is in less than 4 weeks, but where's the fun in that? :-)

Neither of us really care where we place, but I guarantee it will be the best time ever! Those of you out there who have been to an event know what I'm talking about. (You meet the greatest people at these competitions!)

Another cool thing about this trip is that we get to soak up throwing tips and techniques from some of the best throwers in the country! People like Mike Bainton, Jim Tanner, Burl Carl, Lee Fugatt, Rick Lemberg, Joe Darrah, Rev. Dr. David Adamovich (The Great Throwdini), John Bailey, Mike Kolisch, Bob Karp (Master Of The Blade) and also in attendance will be Gil Hibben!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There will be an induction ceremony of some people into the International Knife Throwers Hall Of Fame on the 11th of October and the competition will follow on the 12th and 13th.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is going to be one fine event so if anyone out there feels like making the trip, I promise you won't regret it! And if you think you aren't ready for a competition yet, you are wrong. You will learn so much from attending one event that your scores will have no choice but to improve - and think about how much more prepared you'll be for your "next" event :-)

Feel free to email me if you have any questions at all about the induction ceremony or the contest and I'll point you to whatever info you need! Or you can find out more by visiting this page:

2. GUEST COLUMN:

CUSTOM TOMAHAWKS FROM TENNESSEE
by Jack Woerner

A little background on my hawks...

A while back I saved and saved to buy a nice hawk from RMJ Forge, but was disappointed to find he had stopped orders to the public. So, in my frustration, I said to heck with it, and I'll forge 'em myself.

I make the blades of 1095 steel, head/bodies of 1045, weld them up & beat them to shape. I then harden and temper them so that a new file will cut the edge, but an old file will just "sing" on the blade.

My handle material comes from Ebay mostly, I stain the maple with "Red Devil Lye" and brown the steel with Birchwood Casey "Plum Brown" (works great!), then coat everything with tung oil and rub it in with 0000 steel wool. (Check out the pictures to see my finished products.)

My nice maple tomahawks are for hunting, I use 'em for building tree stands, mending fences, butchering deer out after quartering, etc. I do not throw my maple handled blades, I'll push a 20" hickory handle in them for that. I also included a pic of the sheath as I couldn't find a good period-ish looking sheath - so again - I made my own.

Most of my work comes in about 32oz. - this size seems to throw well for me, but is a little brutal on my targets. I throw my hawks 1 full revolution at about 18-20 feet, with halves at about 10 foot intervals and doubles out at 40 something feet (if you have the arm for it!)

I'll also throw in a picture of a Cold Steel Rifleman I modified a little, and browned up for a utility thrower (it's weight matches most of my own designs so I don't get screwed up with weights that much).

I drilled/filed the cross in the blade and found it ALOT easier than I had dreaded making... easy "mod" that works well, and looks unique.

I am really enjoying looking at all the great work of the knife throwers on this site, their targets, and throwing skills - VERY IMPRESSIVE!

After I finish with a lot of industrial work I hope to pick up my email/web site communications with folks from the site. Anyone can also shoot me a line here at work: woernerjack@bfusa.com if they have a question, need a drawing of some hawk I've made, sheath or what ever.

I really think you will all be impressed by Jack's work. Even though this is just a hobby for him, after seeing some of his work you'll think he's been doing this professionally for years!
