1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello Throwing Friends!

Now that the warm weather is here there are all sorts of things keeping me busy. Like practicing for the upcoming event in Austin, TX! (Boy do I need help with my spear throwing! :-)))

And I've also been giving lots of free lessons to neighbors, friends and quite a few people I've met through my web site. This is great because that means there are going to be more people who may attend the "Throwzini Throwing Party"!

I don't have a date set yet, but I am working on it as we speak! For those of you who are new to the list, The Throwzini Throwing Party is just a day of throwing at my house in Milwaukee, WI. Anyone who can make it is more than welcome to come by and throw a few! You get to abuse my knives, axes, spikes or any other pointy thing you can find. Just bring yourself and be ready to have a great time!

Here are some pictures from last years get-together:

Once you're there just go to the "2002 Throwzini Throwing Party" link. And you can get an idea of what you're in store for!

As soon as I have all the details ironed out I will mention it in an upcoming newsletter and then anyone interested in attending can contact me for more info!

I'll get back to you all asap! :-)

EVENT RESULTS
We have the results of The 6th Annual Hurlathon and also some very nice pics from the event sent in by Todd Abrams. (Todd is part of the "San Diego Chuckers" team that took part in the fun :-)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

SEARCHABLE DATABASE FOR PAST COMPETITION SCORES
by Tim Valentine

I am pleased to announce that the "Sticking Point" web site has just implemented a searchable database for results of past competitions. You are now capable of getting listed results by last name, organization, and date.

You are also presented with a "Performance quotient" (i.e. score divided by possible points) for each competitor. Also, for the list produced, you will be presented with a cumulative sum of points and possible points and a cumulative performance quotient.

This allows for some very detailed analysis between different combinations of individuals, organizations, and dates.

Using a "Performance quotient" value goes a long way to leveling the field for comparisons between competition formats. There is still another factor of event complexity (i.e. how difficult) which cannot be determined now as there really is not enough data to devise a relationship to complexity.

For now, one can say that competition A is a little tougher than competition B so I should be xx% points of competition B if I compete in competition A. It's a lot of mathematical crap, but in general terms it works well enough, especially when a competitor's score can fluctuate up to 20% between competitions (check out the data!!!).

Be advised at this time that I do not have complete listings of all competitors, mostly before the 1999 time frame. I also do not have individual event scores for some of the competitions. Only competitors for whom I have a total score are listed. I have contacted the club managers for complete listings and scores to update the database to be all inclusive.

From what exists currently, I have observed many trends and reinforced some old beliefs about differences between competition styles and the results they produce. I won't bias anyone here with that though, as you can slice and dice the info yourself and form your own opinions.

Have fun...
