GUEST COLUMN: THE SOCIETY FOR CREATIVE ANACHRONISM by Lawrence Czekaj I recently participated in a SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) throwing event. The Society has, over the last few years, been institutionalizing thrown weapons rules for safety and competition. I thought that readers of this newsletter might find the Society's competition format of interest. The Society has, what some might consider, quite a grueling format for thrown weapons competition. A participant in a competition is expected to throw two of three weapons. At the competition in which I participated, the competitors had a choice of knives, axes (tomahawks) and spears. The Society does not, at this time, stipulate weight or length requirements for any of these items. ALL weapons to be used on the range must be inspected (such is the price of living in a litigious society). The competitors are allowed four throws with any implement. The four throws are split into two rounds. Each round must be from a different distance. The distances are broken down into ten foot denominations. EXAMPLE: *During my first round, I threw two knives from a range of about eleven feet (single-spin range). I scored two bull's-eyes. *My double-spin range is, unfortunately, about eighteen feet but I was not allowed to throw from this distance. My next round had to be beyond twenty feet from the target, so... *My second round was thrown from around twenty-six feet (triple-spin range). I scored one bull's-eye and a stick in the secondary ring. The officials on the range were duly impressed... so was I, for that matter. The SCA's thrown weapons program (for lack of a better term) is in its infancy. With time and input from participants, more elaborate competition formats will emerge. Of this I have no doubt. Unlike many of the organizations currently trying to normalize the sport, the Society operates democratically as far as policy is concerned. They are definitely looking for experienced throwers who are willing to teach and conduct range activities. COMMERCIAL ENDORSEMENT: The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an International organization dedicated to researching and re-creating pre 17th century European history. All persons interested in such study are invited to check out: http://www.sca.org/ AOL USERS LINK to obtain information about the SCA. Article Contributed By: Lawrence Czekaj madinmd@hotmail.com Conrad Crews was kind enough to share some photos of one of these past events, so if you are interested in checking out some pictures just follow this link: http://www.throwzini.com/events.html AOL USERS LINK Once you're on that page, then click on the link titled SOCIETY FOR CREATIVE ANACHRONISM. ============================================= 3.
