1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello "Fellow Flingers of Steel"!

What a nice week its been! The temps were up in the 80's for a couple days and I got to throw for HOURS both days!!! And then the temps dropped back down into the 40's and it started raining :-) (Welcome to Wisconsin) One day Summer will be here, I can just feel it! Anyway, the 2 days of throwing I got in was fantastic!

A couple of my neighbors were barbecuing and heard the noise and decided to come by for a few rounds which is always good. My neighbor "Bubba", aka Tony, came by and was throwing my Firestone ThrowingAxes underhanded from about 28 feet, (2 spins). (Tony has been here before :-)

His buddy Tim was with him and as soon as he saw Bubba stick a few he couldn't take it anymore and grabbed up a few axes and stepped to the line. But before we got him sticking them on a consistent basis he had to get back to the grill because there was some yelling from his yard about "something is burning" :-)

So I grabbed up one of John Bailey's instructional videos and gave it to Tim. I told him if he had any desire to learn more about the sport, just take a look at the video. I also told him to listen for the "clanging across the alley". Whenever you hear the clanging, you are invited back to throw!

Hopefully he'll be back. If not, then at least he won't have to wonder what that racket is over there :-)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

LEARNING THROUGH OSMOSIS
by Daniel Clark

I don't know what's gotten in to me lately. Since I've returned from the WWAC/PKT event in Las Vegas, I am throwing way out of my league. I am easily performing the more difficult drills I practice.

For example I take five knives and starting at 21' (2 1/2 spins), I throw one knife, then move up to 18' (2 spins) and throw one, then 15' (1 1/2 spins), then 12' (1 spin), then 8' (1/2 spin). I retrieve my knives and repeat only this time starting at the 8' line and moving backward.

Since Vegas I'm sticking every knife into the 8" circle on my target. This may seem rudimentary to some of you, but it has always been tough for me to change distances like that.

In the past I would have been happy just sticking all five knives during this drill. Now I am consistently hitting inside the 8" target with every knife.

I am doing equally well when I throw knives of varying lengths or all from one distance. It's almost upsetting. Since I am not aware of why I'm throwing so well, I live in fear that today may be the day when all of a sudden I start bouncing blades off the garage floor again.

I was told that my throwing would improve after competing, but I didn't realise the difference would be so great or that I would be apparently learning through osmosis. I'll let you know when the other shoe drops.

Aloha!

THOUGHTS FROM A TOP TOURNAMENT THROWER
It doesn't seem strange at all Dan, you were throwing well in Vegas but I think you may have changed your pattern or habits a bit since then and are finding out that you were listening to all the people talking to you!

As I said, when you are surrounded by that kind of talent it is hard not to improve and if you take the advise you need or can use, and leave the rest, you will improve. - Joe Darrah
