2. GUEST COLUMN:

2003 WWAC/PACIFIC KNIFE THROWERS OBSTACLE COURSE EVENT
by Rick Lemberg

It was a solid competition from beginning to end. For those that could not be there, the obstacle course event was the among the best and closest contests I've seen in the 80+ contests I've thrown in.

Putting time pressure on the experts is always a fun contest environment. This year it seemed to bring out the best in everybody. Thought I had it locked until 3 throwers showed us all how to approach perfection in a ridiculously hard scenario with tiny 3" wood and tape targets.

THE OBSTACLES
The first target was a tiny 4.5" triangle of rope that you had to stick in the center of WITHOUT TOUCHING THE ROPE. If you accidentally cut the rope, then the time would keep going while you re strung a fresh piece to prepare to throw at the triangle again. 18 throwers entered and no one cut the rope! Some of these guys had knives wide enough to give them only 1/2" or so in leeway to stick that triangle, yet several of them did it with the very first throw!

The next target had 2 small balloons to break, then target #3 had three separate round Redwood targets that ranged from 3" to 8", then the final set was a series of five, 3" x 4" pieces of checkered tape that had to be stuck.

These 10 total targets were nasty, yet truly served for everyone to "show their stuff" as we roared as thrower after thrower ignored the time pressure and nailed target after target... Outstanding.... Especially to have 5 extremely impressive top scores that fell during the contest as another expert worked the course.

In playing with my calculator, I just found that there have indeed been over 100 contests since the clubs started rolling these events out of South Carolina, Northern California, Nevada, New England (and now Texas, Colorado and several other locations).

With the 12ft, 18ft, 'Hawk, Speed, Distance, Frontier Challenge, and Obstacle Course contests, Vegas alone generates 7 throwing contests every year, not including the dozens of other contests open to throwers that happen to have other skills.

We are also able to put on 5 minute stunt showcase presentations for the crowd that they give awards for and for the agents in attendance. (Lee Fugatt and I did one together 4-5 years ago).

Lee's Hurlathon is the PKT Western States Championship and has another 5-6 contests a year including a full AKTA Sanctioned PKT Event + Spear Throwing, and other skill events. All totaled, I count nearly 100 contests just within the events I've thrown in...
