GUEST COLUMN: WHAT I'VE LEARNED ABOUT TARGETS by Carl Geddes First of all, listen when Ed Sackett and Matthew Rapaport tell you to wet your target first BEFORE you throw. Targets will last noticeably longer! My new "wet" targets are hardly showing any wear. It's only taken me two years to catch on to that idea? Geez! I built a 2x4 target about a month ago. I laid 8" 2x4's side by side until the throwing area was about 2 feet. I then clamped it all together and put a double frame around the whole affair. I used 3" wood screws to hold the frame together. Now that I wet the targets I found the wood swelled so much that it broke my frame work. The screws literally broke in half! I've had to rebuild the frame twice in a month's time. Also, if you don't wet the 2x4 targets your knives, particularly big the knives, will tear up the 2x4's so quickly you will need to replace them every time you throw. To be kind, I would say this type of target SUCKS, big time! I spent 2 1/2 hours building and mounting the 2x4 target. I could have become a better knife thrower in that time! Don't waste the time or the money to make a 2x4 target! Tree rounds really are the best knife and hawk target. So, here's what I've learned about targets after two years of throwing: Nothing holds up to knives and hawks like a tree round. Some wood is better than others. Always wet your targets prior to throwing. And, don't waste your time trying to build a target out of 2x4s. Your time will be better spent throwing. Take care all, Life is good! Carl Geddes San Diego, CA cgeddes@mindspring.com PS My rounds have lasted over 6 months, including the Chucker 2002 just because I started to wet my rounds each time before I throw! Also, to find out who Ed Sackett and Matt Rapaport are just follow this link to our Local Throwers page... they are listed in MI and CA: http://www.throwzini.com/local_throwers.html AOL USERS LINK ============================================= 3. SMALLER LOGS EQUAL SMALLER GROUPS by Burl Carl Next time you're searching for new tree rounds for your target range, try finding smaller diameter rounds, like ten to eleven inches in diameter. They are easier to mount because they are lighter in weight, AND they will help you focus better on hitting an eight inch target. I found that when I practice with regulation size targets - about twenty inches, I tend to get sloppy (too many 1 point hits on the outer ring). I use a cardboard template that is 8 inches in diameter. There is a 2 1/2" hole in the middle of the template. I hold the cardboard template in place on the target and spray paint the center bullseye and spray just around the edge of the template. This will give you an eight inch (non sprayed) area and a regulation size bullseye (2 1/2 inches). You can also, as an alternative to holding the template in place, pin it to the tree round when spray painting. Here is the secret to improving your bullseye hit ratio from whatever distance you throw from. Concentrate on throwing at a spot on the target about the size of a silver dollar. If you are using correct form when throwing - ie. windup, release, follow through etc. - watch how your throws are grouping (they are grouping right? Well they should be if your form is correct). Change your point of aim (pick a new spot) to compensate for where your grouping is hitting the target. It's kind of like adjusting the sights on a rifle (elevation and windage). Some days I can aim right at the bullseye and hit it dead on from 8 to 15 feet away. Other days I might have to move my point of aim up or to the left or to the right, depending on where my groups are hitting.
