2. GUEST COLUMN:

A POOR MAN'S TREE ROUND
by John L. Bailey

Here's a poor mans tree round.... well a square one anyway.

Go to the local sub-division site [they're everywhere down here in Florida], pick up all the 2x4 cut off's you can find. Cut them down to 8 to 10 inches long, then stack them up side by side, and one on top of another.

Glue them together with a little "Weldwood" glue on each. When you have seven or eight rows stacked about 2 feet high, you'll need to make a frame. Put a 2 foot long 2x4 with glue on the inside, on each side and bar clamp from the back.

Do the same thing with 2 - 2x4's with glued surfaces for the top and bottom. Bar clamp from the front.

After everything sets up, get your handy electric screwdriver out and use 3 inch drywall screws to tighten up the frame.

Now you have yourself a square round... I have made these for years and they hold up very well, I have even hammered out the chopped center [after I have thrown into BOTH sides] and hammered in glued up 2x4 filler pieces.

They're free for the most part. If you wanted to you could run down to Home Depot and have them cut new 2x4's for you if you like. BTW 4x4's are better, but harder to cut up.

TIP #1
The better the frame, the longer the target will hold up.

TIP #2
Same goes for more glue. The better the glue job, the longer the target will last.

TIP #3
Screw a piece of plywood on the back to make the frame even more sturdy, change sides when you flip it over.

TIP #4
While you at Home Depot, pick up a gallon of "oop's" paint, and mop the whole thing good. This will add months of life to the target. At least here in WET Florida.

("Oops paint" is paint that was mixed wrong by the store, so they mark it WAY DOWN for quick sale.)

4. IMPROVING YOUR GAME BY KEEPING SCORE
by Carl Geddes

Lately, I've been practicing and KEEPING SCORE. Keeping score seems to really help me improve quickly. (If you don't keep track of your scores, you won't know if you're improving!) Since the Vegas trip my scores have gone up over 20 points.

Unlike most people, whatever I'm throwing in practice seems to be what I throw in competition. I guess I'm old enough not to get the competition jitters. I would recommend keeping score to everyone. You get better faster!

My practice sessions for an AKTA event are 90-120 knives at 12 feet, 90-120 knives at 18 feet, then I throw 40 knives at each distance for score.

I also throw 40 tomahawks at 14 feet for score. Afterwards, I throw 20 each, 1 1/2 and 2 spins with the hawk.

I then close with throwing the table knives I've gotten from restaurants just for fun. I do this three days a week. I try to practice like Burl Carl says, "don't just practice, practice perfect." It works!

Out for now,

Carl Geddes
San Diego, CA
cgeddes@mindspring.com

I just figured out how much weight I throw at my practice sessions with the knife and the hawk. I throw 500lbs. per session. That's 1500lbs. per week, and 78,000lbs. per year!

In my two years of throwing I've thrown 156,000lbs. of knives and hawks. Cool!

Just another useless knife throwing statistic to keep in my head :-)
