Since its cold outside here in Wisconsin, I have pretty much retired my "bigger" throwing knives for the Winter. (I can still throw the smaller ones in my basement though! :) So anyway, if you live somewhere where its getting cold, now is a great time to do some maintenance on your knives. Time to wash all the dirt and mud off of them, file down any burrs, and then oil them up for the Winter so they won't rust. REMOVING BURRS Your knives can get beat up from bouncing off of other knives, or hitting the ground, a rock, or your target stand etc. Sometimes you end up with sharp pieces of steel protruding out of your throwers... This is bad. Believe me this is bad! Especially if you don't notice 'til the knife is sliding out of your hand, and the steel is either sliding into, or slicing open your finger! An easy way to avoid this problem is by sliding your fingers gently down your knives before pulling them out of the target or picking them up off of the ground. If you feel any sharp pieces/burrs, just go grab a file and get rid of the possible splinter! (A belt sander works even better if you have access to one.) CLEANING THE KNIVES Once all the dings/dents are smoothed out its time to clean the knives up. Those green "scrubby" pads work great for cleaning the dirt off of the knives! They even take rust off if its not too far along. Soap and water will also work for cleaning them. Just be sure to dry the knives COMPLETELY or they will rust! STORAGE When you're done cleaning them, wipe them down with a towel that has some sort of light machine or other oil, wrap them up in a dry towel and put them in a dry place. They will be ready to throw in a few months when it warms up! Well thats about it for this week. Hope you're all doing great and throwing as often as possible! Keep the pointy end down range! GUEST COLUMN: MY "CURRENT" FAVORITE THING TO THROW by Mike Gerety Got home early yesterday, I had a Doctors appointment and was home a little after three. Found this really neat video in my mail box. (John Bailey's Recreational Knife Throwing Part II - Advanced Techniques: http://www.throwzini.com/jb_vid2_desc.html AOL USERS LINK) Watched said video and headed for the targets. Got in about an hours worth of flinging pointy things down range. Makes me so relaxed. The SKS spikes have become my current favorite to throw. There is a fluid and very "natural" under hand throw with these. I prefer a blade throw with them but am practicing with both ends. I still haven't gotten any better at the 32ft range 50/50 is still the best I've done. With my blade throw my favorite increments are the 1/2 spin ranges at which I've improved nicely. I'm still mixing it up with what I throw. I take a selection of pointy things to the range with me. I don't recommend this to the new thrower. Like John Bailey says in his video "get the knife you are going to use and stick with it". I've never thrown in an organized competition before and am making targets to practice with. I'm going to use a little trick I learned in the Army from my practice time on the firing range before the commanding Generals pistol matches. I'm making my target at 1/2 size. When it comes time to throw at the real thing it looks the size of a billboard. This gives you a great "self psyche" advantage. It worked great for me. I came in at 30th out of 280. With the top 20 taken by the "professionals" And my team at HSC 7th Medical Battalion taking 8 of the next ten slots. This was a major upset at Fort Ord at the time. As the infantry usually had the top shooters. Until the medics decided to compete that is. Beware of flying metal and have a good day! ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER by Chris Becker I got my 13.5" Dragon knives a week ago today. I am very happy with the knives, and more than a little impressed with the change in my stick rate. (To see the knives I'm talking about just follow this link: http://www.throwzini.com/13_5dragdesc.html AOL USERS LINK) With my old floaters (United Cutlery Viper knockoffs) I was happy to stick a two revolution throw at 20 feet, with about 66.6% stick ratio (2 out of 3). With the Dragons, I was happy to find that I was able to stick the knives close to 100% at the same distance. Feeling bold, I backed out to 28 feet for a full three revolutions (I had done this in the past but with no consistency). Lo and behold, the Dragons were sticking at 28 feet, also about 100% of the time!!! Now with a completely swollen head I backed out to 36 feet to attempt a four revolution throw (I was breaking new ground) something I had not attempted before. I was amazed to find that at 36 feet I could stick the knives, well not close to 100%, but much better than 66.6%!!! Holy Cow!!! Now 36 feet for me is difficult because I throw at an Oak tree round that sits on the ground, and it's also a downhill throw. My initial attempts at a 36 foot throw all landed in the dirt/grass in front of the target, I was definitely not used to adjusting for the drop a throw of that distance causes/necessitates. But once I made the height adjustment, presto!!! Too make a long story short, there is definitely something to say about using good knives. I mean, I don't believe that I have just tapped a latent talent that was buried somewhere inside me. My technique, IMHO, has not improved or changed, all I did was stumble across The Great Throwzini site, read an article about how quality knives make for great/better throwing, and made the decision to invest (Wow, my run-ons, really run on :) Lastly, I had to write you and say thanks. If it wasn't for your site I'd still be a recreational knife bouncer, rather than an ecstatic knife thrower. Have a good weekend...CB Article Contributed by: C.
