WHAT'S NEW Hello everybody and welcome to Issue #6. Wow, issue #6! Before I started this newsletter I was worried that there wasn't enough information out there to keep this ezine going for very long. Boy was I wrong! Every week I get all sorts of e-mail from fellow throwers from all over the place! I would like to thank everyone who is subscribing to this newsletter because without your sharing of ideas and knowledge on this fine sport... I would of ran out of stuff to talk about after the 2nd issue ;-} Just kidding! My point is that when one of you makes a suggestion or submission for the newsletter, it goes to literally hundreds of other throwers all over the country. Everybody benefits from it, and everybody appreciates it. The free exchange of information! I know that this will help promote the sport. If there is something that doesn't seem appealing to you about throwing weapons, than maybe something you learn from another thrower will spark that burning desire to throw everything around you with a point! Anyway, when I try to recruit my friends to throw knives with me, a lot of times I get, "It's just not for me," or some other excuse I don't believe ;) I just keep on digging. I know I'll find "something" that they will like about it! Speaking of this, I went to visit some old friends at a local watering hole Friday night. I used to throw on a pretty competitive dart league with these guys a few years back and I started thinking, "They would love this stuff!" Throwing knives is just like throwing BIG darts! It's the same idea... to hit a pre-determined area on your target, (and then rub it in and razz your opponent when you beat him or her). LOL I just have to convince my old dart buddies of this now. (That means you Neal, Gary, and Matt!) I got all of their e-mail addresses Friday night and they are all subscribed to this newsletter but they won't know it until they read this ;-} A great bunch of guys who were unstoppable on the dart board at times. But guess what fellas... I've got a new game for you to try... and you can use my darts! http://www.throwzini.com Thanks to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!! ======================================== 2. GUEST COLUMN: KNIFE THROWING - MOUNTAIN MAN STYLE by: Mike Kolisch This is my first year throwing AKTA rules. I have been throwing at Mountain Man Competitions for the last four years. There are several differences. The things that we have in common are that we are all interested in the promotions of SAFE knife and tomahawk throwing. We all enjoy the knife throwing, competition and the camaraderie. Keep in mind that all throws are not governed by any set rules. The person in charge of the competition makes the rules. Here are some rules from previous events: Competitors usually must be in primitive dress. (Pre 1840's, Mountain Man Era.) KNIVES Knives must have a handle; it must be of a natural substance. (leather, bone, antler or rawhide). Knives are thrown by the handle. No half turns. Most Mountain Man knives are also used as camp knives and generally have a very sharp edge. One knife is thrown and then retrieved. Knives are thrown 1 turn, 2 turns and some distance throws. TOMAHAWKS Tomahawks can only have a 4' cutting edge. No double bit or spikes. The handle must be a natural material. No metal handles. No taped handle. Although you can use leather or raw ride. Tomahawks are thrown 1 turn, 1 ½ turns, 2 turns and some distance throws. TARGETS The target is usually a log end supported on a tri-pod. Or log ends lying on the ground. GAMES There are too many different types of throws to list so I will explain a few: 1 - CARD 1 card is attached to the center of the log end. The thrower has 5 throws. A stick in the block counts for 1 point, a cut on the card counts 2 points and a center cut (not cutting out of any edge) counts 3 points. CLOCK 5 cards are place on the log, 12,3,6,and 9 o'clock and in the center. It is scored the same as 1 card. DIAMOND A card is place in the center of the block, a rubber band is placed around the card in the shape of a diamond. The scoring is 1 point for a stick outside the rubber band, 2 points for a stick inside the rubber band, 3 points for a cut of the card and 5 points for a center cut. Cut the rubber band and receive no points. WALK ACROSS Thrower sticks the knife or hawk in the far most left side of the block. A marker is placed at the point of the stick. All of the following knives must stick to the right of the marker. The one with the most sticks across the block is the winner. TRAIL WALKS A trail walks course consists of 5 to 10 targets. All targets are at an undetermined distance. No stepping off. There is a stake or marker set at a minimum distance. The thrower must throw from behind the stake. Most targets simulate a mountain man situation. There are some major events being held. The bigger they get, the better the money. One is the Rocky Mountain Championships. It is held in Creede, Co. $2000.00 total cash payback. A second one is the Texas State Championships, with the same amount of prizes. For more information on these kinds of events, you can contact me, or they will be updated on my web site. Looking forward to meeting some of you throwers! Article contributed by. . .
