My good buddy Pete (Yes, the "Engineering Guru" who you've heard about before), showed up on his day off and we had it all done with bullseyes painted on the logs after about five hours. My latest design is one that will last a while! I've got a backboard made out of 7 Pine 2X12's. They are screwed together from the back and attached with 4 2X6's. One at the top, one at the bottom and two in the middle. The backboard is a wall about 7 feet 6 inches tall and 7 feet wide... reminds me of a sail on a pirate ship! (Maybe I'll get a flag pole? :) Since it was so heavy we had to use some angle iron braces coming off the back for some added "support" and we drilled those into the concrete so its not going anywhere! The angle iron even doubles as a place to park our garbage cans so my girlfriend can't even complain... Life is Good!!! Anyway, if you want to check out some pictures of the newest target range with about a forty foot throwing lane, just follow this link: http://www.throwzini.com/outdoor_targets.html And then click on the first link called OUTDOOR BACKSTOP/TARGET. GUEST COLUMN: LORD THORSTEIN'S CHALLENGE by Lord Thorstein von Drakensburg (aka David M. Fella) A lot of people look at me funny when I tell them about this contest but you really have to try it. The main point of this is to get people to learn to throw by the handle and the blade. It gets more involved than that but keep in mind, I had been throwing for less than 5 months when I came up with, and could stick, all the throws I tell about in the contest. (Note to SCA members: Some of the throws used in this competition require the approval of a SCA Thrown Weapons Marshall before attempting them at any SCA sponsored function.) In this competition each contestant must stick 4 knives anywhere on the face of the target in the least number of throws. 2 knives must be thrown by the handle and 2 knives must be thrown by the blade. Each contestant starts with 10 points. 1 point is subtracted for each throw made even if the knife does not stick in the target. If all 4 knives are thrown at the same distance from the target, a bonus of 1 point will be added to the final score. High score wins. Example: You can throw a knife by the blade at a distance of about 13 feet from the target, at 1 and 1/2 rotations. By changing your grip on the knife you can slow the spin to 1 rotation and throw the knife by the handle from the same distance of 13 feet. A contestant may throw 1 knife at a time or 2, 3 or all 4 knives in one throw. (SCA members take note) DEFINITIONS: 1). A "Throw" is defined as a knife or knives held in one hand (right or left) and released in the direction of the target. If the knife or knives do not "stick" in the target this is still counted as a "throw". Holding a knife in your right hand and a knife in your left hand and "throwing" both at the same time would count as 2 "throws". 2). A "Stick" is defined as the blade end of the knife sticking in the target. 3). "Throwing all 4 knives from the same distance" is defined as the tip of the thrower's leading foot moving no more than 3 inches forwards or backwards from it's position at the time of the first throw. (Note: Put a mark on the ground where your toe is before you make your first throw.) 4).Throwing all 4 knives at once (2 by the blade, 2 by the handle) is called a "Thorstein", (Hey, I thought up this challenge :-) and will score 10 points if all 4 knives "stick". And yes it can be done! If you are at an Event that will not allow more than 1 knife to be thrown at a time, increase the number of knives to 6 or 8 (half by blade, half by handle). Throwing a "Thorstein" is something you have to work up to. Learn to control the rotation of your knife, then work on throwing 2 knives at once. After that work on holding 1 knife by the blade and 1 by the handle. Above all "be safe", don't throw too hard, check your knives for slivers and burrs after each throw, take your time, don't rush yourself... and HAVE FUN!!! Believe me, the first time you stick a "Thorstein" you'll get a high like no other! Article Contributed By David M. A MILD DIVERSION by Carl Geddes Hey people, I have started a small collection of tableware. When I eat in a restaurant I ask the manager if I can buy one of their table knives. They all say yes. I guess it's because I'm such a nice guy :-) Some managers and owners, in my favorite restaurants, actually give me a knife to take home. After I'm done with my regular throwing session I bring out the table knives, as is, no sharpening. Just stock tableware. Don't tell me you throwers have not looked at the tableware in a restaurant and thought about throwing it. Well make your fantasies come true! Sometimes I even practice from a patio chair just to get the feel of throwing while sitting down. It's fun to fantasize. I also dream of winning the lottery!!!
