1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello people!

Things are going great! Still have lots of projects around the new house, but I'm a couple steps closer to the perfect outdoor throwing range!!!

I also met another cool "knife guy" named Joe Darrah. He has been throwing for 37yrs and is also a knife collector. You can check out his throwing bio. on the LOCAL THROWERS page under the state of Pennsylvania:

http://www.throwzini.com/local_throwers.html

Joe has shared tons of his time and info with me the past few weeks and I just wanted to say, "Hey, Thanks Joe!" :) One thing I've learned since starting this site is that "knife throwers are the nicest/coolest people you'll ever meet"!

Hope you're all throwing great! Now on to some other knife throwing updates...

UPCOMING EVENT
There is a Mountain Man event coming up June 21st - 23rd, 2002, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. For more info just follow this link:

SITE UPDATE
I've got another great target design in the OUTDOOR TARGET section of the site that was sent in by Rich Enright of CA. Be sure to take a look at it:

LOCAL THROWERS
Our goal is to have a "bazillion" throwers listed in every state. So if you are looking for people to hang out with and throw sharp pieces of metal then this is the place for you. You never know, there could be another thrower who lives right in your neighborhood!

Currently we have 82 throwers listed in 28 states, and 13 different countries! And more people are signing up every week! With your help, we should have people listed in every state in no time at all! So c'mon and send in your info!

Going on vacation? Check the LOCAL THROWERS page first to see if there are any people listed near your destination. It's easy to bring your knives just about anywhere you go, and you won't have to haul your targets from home :) So c'mon and check it out!

Follow this link for more details or to see if there are any throwers that live near you:

2. GUEST COLUMN:

COLD STEEL TORPEDOES
by Chuck Fogarty

A couple of years ago I bought 3 Cold Steel Torpedoes, intending to throw them along with my knives and hawks. The torpedoes truly are great fun to throw. They are 15 inches long, measure 1 inch at the center and weigh 2 pounds. They taper to a point at each end.

The torpedoes feel very heavy and can tire your arm quickly. However they are so heavy you almost don't have to throw them at the target, you can lob them up there so they seem to float but they really dig in. Sometimes it is quite a job to pull them out of a wooden target.

I haven't thrown them much lately besides just throwing a few after finishing with the knives and hawks. Today I decided to concentrate on the torpedoes and devote the entire session to them.

I started at 8 feet for 1/2 turn and stuck every one with reasonable accuracy. Burl Carl *The Underhand Man* said he throws the torpedoes underhand like you would lateral a football, with a spiral using your fingers to impart spin. I tried this a few times but didn't even come close to sticking one. This is a no turn throw and seems like it would be feasible but it didn't work for me.

Burl is a truly great underhand thrower and throws BIG bowie knives he makes himself at several turns, underhand and overhand.

I moved back to 14 feet and threw at one turn with good results, sticking almost every one with decent accuracy. I throw hawks at 14 feet for one turn and being inherently lazy and wanting to save steps I decided to throw some hawks from the same distance. That worked very well.

I have 6 tree rounds as targets and I would throw 3 torpedoes and 3 hawks and then retrieve. The torpedoes seem to match up with the hawks as far as turns go, 1 turn from 14 feet and 1 1/2 turns from 18 to 19 feet.

All in all it was a good session, I really enjoyed throwing the torpedoes and didn't have a sore arm probably because I didn't have to put any steam on them.

I threw for almost an hour which may not seem like much but throwing nonstop by yourself, that's a lot of tosses especially with torpedoes and hawks!!!

4. DO-IT-YOURSELF THROWERS
by Mike Gerety

I make throwing spikes from bicycle spokes and craft beads that I buy at discount stores. The spokes I get for free trash picking. I throw them just like a knife, from all the regular throwing distances.

My friends still look on dumbfounded when these stick from 20 or more feet.

They stick best in Styrofoam, it definitely is more forgiving. Cardboard is good also, but the spikes will stick in anything a knife will.

These throwers are a lot of fun and they help develop a fine sense of the balance point and the mechanics of a good throw. They are so light that they exaggerate what ever you are doing in your throw. I use them to fine tune my throwing.

A good game to play with them is "Small Change". First take your target and lay it down. Then throw a pocket full of change out on it. And then you spray paint over the face of the target. This leaves a bunch of clean spots for your targets after you remove the change.

You then write in the coin value and play for "Small Change".

I hope that you enjoy these. After all they are pointy and you throw them. Whats not to like?

Happy hurling!
