GUEST COLUMN: YOU CAN ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING NEW by Mike Gerety Got a nice day on Saturday and got to throw til my arm was sore. Instead of throwing til the knives get so cold that they stick to your hand. And then on that same night we got 3 inches of wet sticky white stuff and I had to shovel with a sore arm. But it was all worth it! The snow has already melted and today it was almost 40* outside. The sun is coming up a little earlier each day. Soon I'll be able to get a few throws in in the morning without making myself late for work. My wife got me the "Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk & Axe Throwing... Video" from your site by the good "Reverend Doctor Throwdini". Its excellent!!! (For more details on this fantastic instructional video, just visit The Throwzini home page and click on the FUNDAMENTALS VIDEO link: http://www.throwzini.com/index.html ) I've watched it 3 or 4 times and used the rewind/fast forward near to death on the VCR. I wish that I had time to throw 500 to a 1000 throws a day. I'm happy to get in a couple of dozen when I can. I've learned at least 5 new throws from the video that I haven't tried before. And I think that I throw very different from the good Reverend. But as he said, "Find what feels natural for you". I'm able to throw the SKS Throwing Spikes from about 32 ft. (4 sections of fence) with only a 1/2 rotation by shifting my grip to the balance point and using a blade throw. It's a lot of blade to throw from! (I love the length on these spikes, 15"). I've also been trying all of the inbetween throws and feel really comfortable with them now. I can hit pretty regularly on the 1, 1 1/2 and 2 spin ranges but the three spin is still at less than fifty percent (this is why I bought ten of them... makes the math easy!) I've always changed the balance of my throw so that it was only a 1/2 spin to the target no matter what the range. This works with most items that are long. Except hawks of course, and now I'm practicing three new ways to throw them thanks to the new "Fundamentals" video! I'm still getting around to taking pics of my range and target construction as well as my many pounds of pointy stuff for throwing to post on The Great Throwzini site. Happy Hurling Article Contributed by Mike Gerety maffisto@mediaone.net For more details or to see pictures of the SKS Throwing Spikes that Mike mentioned above, just follow this link: http://www.throwzini.com/sks_bayonet.html ============================================= 3. THE HURLATHON 2002 by Carl Geddes Coming up on May 25-26 is the best dang knife tournament I've ever been to, Lee's Fugatt's "Hurlathon". Lee's Hurlathon is very relaxed and fun. Everyone brings a tent and camps out on his property. You can stay in a motel in Redding but it's about a 30 minute drive to Lee's from Redding. Lee also uses the AKTA rules for both knives and hawks. In addition, Lee has a spear throwing contest, which is a real interesting event. So far, nobody but Lee throws spears very well. On the last night, Lee cooks up one of his "famous" BBQ's. (Last year we had a great lamb dinner.) I've heard he sometimes looks for fresh road kill, but as good as Lee cooks I'd eat whatever he put in front of me. There's also plenty of adult beverage for after the throwing. Since Lee is so "crafty" we also have an arts and crafts class to make some weapons. Last year we made slings and atlatls. This year I think we are making bolos. You just can't have too many things to play with :-). Lee gives trophy's to 1st-3rd place in knives and 1st-3rd place in tomahawks. Also, there is some great Smallmouth Bass fishing just down the road a ways. Article Contributed by Carl Geddes cgeddes@mindspring.com For more information you can email Lee Fugatt: lpndolfn@c-zone.net Or visit this page: http://www.throwzini.com/hurl_02_events.html There are also some scores and pictures listed from previous Hurlathon Events.
