Things have been busy here lately. We just bought a house and have been cleaning, packing and moving for the last couple weeks. The great thing about this is that you get to find all the stuff you forgot you had... like crates of throwers that you don't use anymore, or a jack hammer bit that you saved because you 'thought' your shoulder could stand up to the abuse :) (And yes it still hurts!) I have to figure out how I'm going to setup the new throwing range. I won't have as much room as before, but there's enough to get atleast 2 turns in. Whatever design I decide on, I'll post some pics when its done. (You can be sure its gonna be cool :) And the best part of this whole moving deal... New neighbors to freak out! I can't wait :) THUNK! CLANG! THUNK! THUNK! THUNK!!! Until next time... GUEST COLUMN: WEAPONS THROWING - MEDIEVAL STYLE by Conrad Crews I'm a member of a medieval history and re-enactment organization known as the SCA or Society of Creative Anachronism. (Anachronism just means out of place in time). We do all kinds of medieval things - dancing, arts and crafts, and my favorites - armored fighting and live weapons. When I say 'Live Weapons' I'm referring to thrown weapons - knives, axes, and spears. Go to www.gulfwars.org and hit the 'Live Weapons' link to see the next competition I'll be in. I won't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning anything but it will be a blast! In the SCA there is an order called 'Order of the Weapon Masters' that deal with Live Weapons. There are several levels in the order, the lowest of which I'm pretty sure I can do. I have to be six for six at 15' with an axe, spear, and knife, and six for six with a bow at 20 yds. I have been using a bow since grammar school so putting six in a target at 20 yards with a recurve is no problem. I'm almost 6 for 6 with the axe consistently and also with the spear. Just got to get more practice in with the knives. 15' screws me up. I have to do a turn and a half so I have to throw by the blade. I can't get as consistent a throw as I can when holding it by the handle. Oddly enough I have a similar problem with the axe, but I just throw it with the blade facing me and stick it upside down. Seems to work for me... At the highest level I have to be 3 for 6 with each hand thrown weapon at 45 feet and 3 for 6 with a bow at *80* yds. I can't even SEE the target at 80 yds. Needless to say, I'll be a while getting there. The scary part is that there are a few of these guys walking around... The dates are March 4-7. There is a big awards banquet and show on the last night of the event. The knife event last year had about 40-45 competitors before the "cut." Anyone could enter the event and throw. After the cut, there were about 10 of us still throwing. There are cash and prizes for the winners. Rick Lemberg (Pres. PKT) is planning on using AKTA rules for both knives and tomahawks in 2002. This year Che Che Whitecloud will be one of the banquet night entertainers. The cowboy events are also very fun to watch. There's whip cracking, trick roping, fast drawing, gun spinning, etc. The final "talent" show is very cool. Some of the acts are really wonderful. Lots of entertainers try to be "discovered" by talent agents on the last night, so they really give it their best effort. People who want to throw should contact the WWAC in Las Vegas to make reservations or contact Rick Lemberg. Speaking of reservations, the Tropicana gives all the participants a reduced rate for rooms. Hope to see you all there! Article Contributed by: Carl Geddes cgeddes@mindspring.com For more info on this event email Rick Lemberg: knifethrwr@aol.com To check out some pictures from last years contest or to read about the new events they've added - like who can stick the most knives in 20 seconds?
