1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello people!

Well it finally snowed here. I can't complain though. We made it through half of January without having any snow and that is very unusual. (Last year almost 40" of snow fell in December alone!). I couldn't even see my targets then :)

I have a few new updates to tell you all about so lets get right to them...

WKTG MEMBERS
The World Knife Throwers Guild is waiving all dues for 2002. So if you are "already" a member of the guild, you do not have to send in any money this year.

They are also planning another throwing knife giveaway for all of the guild members. I will post the info on the WKTG page as soon as I have all the details.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the WKTG can follow this link for more details:

http://www.throwzini.com/wktg.html

SAVE ON DRAGON KNIVES
The Dragon Knives have been selling like hot cakes! Since I'm going through so many more nowadays, I can afford to share the wealth and pass some savings on to everyone else! So from now on, if you buy 4 Dragon Knives, you get the 5th one ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!

For more details just follow this link:

LOCAL THROWERS
Our goal is to have a "bazillion" throwers listed in every state. So if you are looking for people to hang out with and throw sharp pieces of metal then this is the place for you. You never know, there could be another thrower who lives right in your neighborhood!

Currently we have throwers listed in 22 states, and 8 different countries! And more people are signing up every week! With your help, we should have people listed in every state in no time at all! So c'mon and send in your info!

Follow this link for more details or to see if there are any throwers that live near you:

Well, I hope you're all having a great New Year so far, and remember to keep the pointy end down range!!!

Until next time...

2. GUEST COLUMN:

GLOWING PRAISE FOR THE NEW SKS SPIKES
by Ben Holland

I am in love! These spikes throw great! They stick deep and they have no edge to take your fingers off when you remove them from the target.

I bought my 6 and took them out to the throwing stump. I guessed at the range and sunk every one of them on the first try!

I have a friend who is in to Kuk Sool Wan Korean Martial Arts, and they use a bunch of different types of throwers.

He and I were out on the range one day and he got me throwing the SKS Spikes one in my left and one in my right hand at the same time, throwing 2 at one time in the same hand, and my favorite, trying to skewer a thrown plastic 20oz. bottle to the target.

It took about 150 throws, but I finally did manage to skewer the bottle to the target. My next goal is to learn to throw 2 spikes in each hand at the same time and for all 4 to hit the target within one foot of each other.

I haven't done much handle throwing with these, but I was able to get good success with 1/2 flips, 1 1/2 flips and 2 1/2 flips (from about 30-31 feet) with blade throws.

There is just something so satisfying about throwing a sharpened steel spike and having it hit, and stick, a 2 foot round of wood - 30 feet away... THUHNK!!!

Thanks for finding these for all of us. I will definitely be ordering more down the line.

4. MAINTAINING YOUR THROWERS
by Chuck Fogarty

Thank goodness for friends with belt sanders!

I made a return visit to my friend that let me use his well equipped garage toolroom to sharpen my hawks. This time I used his belt (is it sander or grinder?) to touch up the points on the 27 throwing knives I always carry with me in the trunk of my car.

I did the whole thing in about 1 1/2 hours. It usually takes about 1/2 hour per knife doing it by hand with a stone, file and sandpaper. This way I touched the 2 or 4 edges to the sander for a few seconds, ran the sander over the entire blade very lightly to get out the burrs and smooth things out.

Tomorrow I'll go to my outdoor target and see if the sharpening makes a difference in the percentage of sticks. It did with the hawks.

I learned something about hawk maintenance from my friend when I did the hawks, it may help someone. I've always struggled with keeping the heads tight on my hawks. My hawks are loaded with nails and screws going upward into the hawk handle under the head. These were augmented by some nails and screws going down between the handle and head from above.

My friend took one look at the hawks and said "Nothing helps from the bottom of the head. Handles stay tight from the top."

I then bought some small metal wedges and after securing the handle as tightly as possible I drove the wedges in from the top and haven't had one loosen up yet.

I hope I've solved that problem!
