I just love those technical terms :) I didn't get too much throwing in this past weekend. I was busy helping a friend move. As far as moving goes, it wasn't bad at all. For one thing he was my neighbor so I only had to walk next door to get started. And he was only moving about 6 blocks away. Short and sweet! Just the way I like 'em! ;) The most fun was when one of the other guys who was helping came up from the basement with an old hollow core door. As soon as I saw it heading for the garbage I went home and grabbed my sks throwing spikes that were strategically placed right inside the back door. By the time I made it back outside, my landlord Fred already had the door leaning against my target stand. He told me he knew it was coming :) He even went home (which is also right next door) and grabbed his set of sks spikes! Fred has been throwing 'hawks for about 20 years. I got him started throwing knives when I moved here back in March and he just threw his first spike about 2 months ago. He picked up knife and spike throwing very fast, probably because of all his experience with tomahawks... Anyway, by the third throw we were sticking those sks spikes right through the door and into the log rounds that were behind it. It was awesome, but short lived. Five minutes later the door was back on the garbage pile and was disappearing under other items people were deciding he didn't need :) So far this was the best move I've ever taken part in. Any time that I get to throw knives, especially with someone else who really enjoys it, I consider it to be a good day! Hope you're all doing great! UNDERHAND! by Burl Carl About 4 years ago I thought it would be cool to design and make a fast draw rig for my throwing bowie. Bear in mind that my knife is 15 inches long. You can see a picture of it in the LOCAL THROWERS page under the CALIFORNIA section: http://throwzini.com/local_throwers.html I needed a design where I could clear the sheath as fast as possible. If I were to draw and throw this monster in the normal fashion (overhand) it would take way too long to get it out of my sheath, wind up, and throw it. I decided to try an underhand draw and throw instead. This would look more like a gunslinger drawing his six shooter. I had seen some speed shooters use break-away holsters and thought this might work for drawing my bowie. I came up with a vague idea of the finished product but didn't know how to get started. I had never made anything with leather before. As it so happened the local Tandy Leather store in my area was giving lessons on leathercrafting. With the owners help I made myself a break-away sheath with a tie down for my leg. It even has a quick release strap to keep the knife firmly in place until needed. I completed the fast draw rig just a couple of weeks before the 1998 PKT tournament in Reno, NV. I hadn't practiced using it much and decided not to embarrass myself by using it until after the competition was over. My plans changed half way through the tournament however. Everyone that day was having a really difficult time with the targets, especially the fourth one. It was the lowest of the four and made of redwood. Many throwers, me included, were not getting them to stick. Over rotation was the main problem due to throwing at a downward angle. My score was so low compared to the leaders I figured why not, I couldn't do any worse. I strapped on my rig. Stepped back from the normal 12' line and got myself set at the 19' line. I can only guess what the audience and contestants were thinking. Probably half were chuckling to themselves and some were wondering what the heck I was up to. I started rocking back and forth to get my rhythm going. Dead silence from the crowd. The fourth time rocking backward, I drew the knife out the back of the sheath, brought it forward in one smooth motion and released the knife... It did a single spin and went "THUNK"!!! The crowd was cheering and clapping. It took a second for me to comprehend that I did it. I missed the bullseye by less than an inch and had hit the second ring dead on! I continued using the underhand draw and throw for the rest of the tournament. I didn't place very high that day (6th place) but I still remember that first fast draw like it was slow motion. --Burl Carl The Underhand Man Burl_Carl@hotmail.com ============================================= 3. TOP TEN REASONS FOR THROWING KNIVES by Chuck Fogarty I belong to a group on the Internet called the Thrower List. A List is a tool that enables you to keep in contact with a bunch of people that all share the same interest. For instance, if I found a new game to play, or a great practice tip and wanted to share it with some other throwers... I just send out one message to the List and it automatically gets sent to everybody that is a member of that list. It's a great way to share ideas, exchange tips, and meet other throwers in your area! Anyway, last year sometime we had someone ask what reasons there were for being a knife thrower. There were all sorts of answers posted from the many throwers on the list. It turned into quite a humor-fest so I saved them. So here they are, in reverse order (just like the David Letterman Show :) Top 10 reasons for throwing knives: 10.
