GUEST COLUMN: KNIFE THROWING WITH THE SCOUTS by Scott Gracia I went and taught a bunch of Scouts how to throw last week. A while back my buddy Pete asked me if I was interested in giving a demonstration for his sons Boy Scout troop. Of course I said yes. The kids of today are the potential throwers of tomorrow!!! The demo was supposed to take place in Pete's backyard but it ended up raining the night it was scheduled for, so we ended up in his garage. No double or triple spins now that it was indoors, but I still got to show them half and full turns with the knives and one spin with the tomahawk. There were about ten kids (between 10 and 11 yrs old) and three parents came along to check it out too. Everybody got to try throwing the knives and they all did great! A couple of the kids even stuck five out of five knives which is fantastic for your first time! You could tell they were excited about the whole idea of throwing knives. I gave a little talk about the basics of throwing... how to stand, how to hold the knives and to always be ready for a bounce back or ricochet. It may not happen often but it can. After about 10 minutes of talking I started throwing. You could hear a pin drop before the first knife left my hand but by the time the fourth one hit the target it was chaos! Their voices were like a chain reaction! First one... then three... then all ten of them were excited and shouting! I'm sure most of you know how it works with kids... bribery gets you everywhere :) So at the beginning of the demo Pete told them if they behaved and followed all the rules they could try throwing some half spins when it was all over. So we got everybody towards the back of the garage and brought them up one at a time. It went so smoothly that we decided to let them try throwing a full turn. So we backed them up to about ten or eleven feet and let them go again. It was such a blast! Seeing the look on their faces when the knives stuck was great. I just knew they would be telling all of their friends at school about it the next day. After the "meeting" was over a couple parents even stayed and threw a few. Since the majority of the garage was empty now, I pulled out the 'hawks and my new SKS Spike Bayonets which were a big hit since two of the guys were ex-military. They told me they had never even thought of throwing their bayonets but would start as soon as they got home :) We had a great time and I told them I'd be happy to come back in the Spring when its warmer and we could set up a "booth" outside for them to throw at again. Hopefully they all had fun and learned something new to do with their friends and family. Thanks to everyone for coming and taking part in the fun! I had a great time!!! STRUGGLING WITH THE ATLATL by Chuck Fogarty Like all throwing objects the atlatl needs maintenance now and then. An atlatl is a 2 foot long throwing stick with a spur on the end. The spur fits into the end of a dart and sends the dart - which is an arrow like object - high and far into the air. My darts are 5 1/2 feet long and are made of 2 aluminum arrows fitted together. The end of the dart has an insert that protects the fragile aluminum from cracking due to the stress of the throw. I had gradually lost my inserts and the ends were beginning to crack. After a wait of almost 2 months I finally found an atlatl maker that would send some inserts and I hoped to slide them right into the ends... They did not fit perfectly however and I found it necessary to hacksaw off about 3/8 of an inch of the end because it tapered in slightly. Then I had to sand the metal inserts down just a bit so they would slide in. Outside I went and gave it a try. It's amazing how you lose your feel or touch. The first 4 throws went well off to the side both left and right and I feared I might have damaged the darts with my attempts at repair but it was just rust showing. I hadn't thrown the atlatl for 2 months and after a few throws the touch returned and I was getting the darts into the right direction. I can throw them about 200 feet and with fair accuracy. I always resent having to spend time working on my knives and hawks as it takes away from my throwing time. My targets are getting "rickety" and I have to spend a few hours replacing some and tightening up the rest. You can't throw without sharp knives and sturdy targets and the same goes for the atlatl... darts must be maintained too. But its all worth it!
