1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello peoples!

It was a great day today! I had a few friends over to throw some knives and other "pointy objects". There were five people that were here, Mike Repa, Mike Dailey, my buddy Scott Bryan and Chuck "The Traveling Knife Throwing Reporter" Fogarty!

Chuck drove up from IL and taught us all how to throw the atlatl. It was a blast! We didn't have very much room to use it, but we all took a turn and had the best time!

We also threw knives, hawks, torpedoes, saw- blades, stars, oh yeah... and some knives!

To check out some of the pics of us throwing today check out:

http://www.throwzini.com/wi_event.html

Everything was perfect today but it was a hot one to say the least. We had to take a few breaks and go inside to cool off. Which worked out just fine because we got to check out a great new knife throwing video made by a friend of mine, David Adamovich (aka "The Great Throwdini").

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF KNIFE, HAWK & AXE THROWING WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO THE IMPALEMENT ARTS by David Adamovich

I met David in Phoenix at the IKTA 2001 Event back in March. I thought he was a great thrower then but now I can see he was just getting warmed up!

This video covers everything you need to know to become a great thrower, and then some!

Grips, stances, release and target designs are only a few of the topics covered. There is also some stunt throwing - like 13 Different Ways to Throw an Axe - and even a look into the Impalement Arts! You know, throwing around pretty girls :0

There's also a clip of a knife he had designed that shoots off a .32 caliber blank when it hits the target! You just gotta see and hear it to appreciate it :)

This video is so new that I don't even have a page set up for it yet. The tape won't be listed on my web site for another few days, but I figured I'd give my subscribers a chance to order before then.

This is a 'Special' available only for a limited time to the people who read this newsletter. So if you would like to order a copy from the first limited run, you can follow this link:

http://www.throwzini.com/tgt_video.html

Thanks again to all my friends who came and threw "stuff" today in the tropical weather, I had a great time and I hope you did too!

Until next time...

2. GUEST COLUMN:

ARCHERY/KNIFE & AXE THROWING EVENT
by Scott Gracia

RACINE INSTICTIVE BOWMEN (R.I.B.)
RIB is a private archery club that is set on 200 acres of forest and fields in Racine, WI. Every year they have an "anniversary shoot" where the club is open to the public and they have camping, food, beer, soda, music, and all sorts of archery ranges to shoot on.

For the past couple years a friend of mine has been talking to the archery club and trying to get them to bring in some other activities for the event... like knife throwing!

So we pitched our idea to the board of directors and they all decided it was a good idea!

ARCHERY RANGES
They have 4 ranges of nothing but full sized, 3-D targets, and there are 14 targets on each range. The 3-D targets ranged from raccoons to buffalo, and everything in between!

They even had exotic animal targets like huge gorillas, tigers and even leopards. And the place that you had to shoot from made it more realistic. Thru trees and brush, up and down hills etc... it was an "archers dream" :)

They also have a pavilion that is about 2 stories tall and you could shoot from the top of that at targets down below you.

They also had a 3-D deer target that slides down a cable that you shoot at from the platform. Very fun to watch!!!

They also have an indoor range with about 20 lanes to shoot on if the weather isn't cooperating. Must be nice :)

ELEPHANT TARGET
I didn't have a chance to walk any of the ranges to take pics but I did get one of the "Elephant Target". The Elephant Target is a full sized elephant that you shoot at from 110 yards away!

If you hit it in the "kill zone" you get your name entered in a door prize drawing. 3 shots for $1.

WILLIAM TELL SHOOT
They also had a target where you got 3 tries at shooting an apple off of a mannequins head for $1. If you hit the apple you get entered in another drawing!

KNIFE/AXE THROWING BOOTH
I taught at least 60 people how to throw over the weekend. And anyone that hit a bullseye won a free soda or tap beer.

I met one of the guys on the Board of Directors for the club and he wants to work on getting more ranges set up next year for the knife and axe throwing! I can't wait!

Maybe next year we'll have a log round sliding on a cable instead of the deer :)

I met lots of great people at the event and I even have a few new friends to throw with now. I couldn't have asked for it to go any better!

They told me around 600 people showed up throughout the weekend and it rained quite a bit Sunday.

Thanks again to everyone that took part in the event. It wouldn't have gone off so smoothly without all your help. So thanks a bunch!!!

4. A QUESTION FOR "THE PANEL"
by Scott Gracia

People send in all types of questions to this site and I always try to share the best possible answers with them. That's how the idea for "The Panel" came about.

Instead of getting one persons view on the subject, I thought it would be better to get some ideas from a few different places.

So I sent the latest question out to a few friends/knife throwers/makers that I have met over the Internet since starting this web site.

I tried to take some of the main points from each reply that I got and fit them all together to make one article. And here it is!

Below is the question that was sent in:

**************************************************
"I have a question as to the recommended tools and ways to sharpen different types of throwing blades.

Also, the recommended degree of sharpening based upon the common types of uses.

There seems to be a lot of different opinions out there.

Thanks,"

Keith Carlton
Keith_Carlton@tivoli.com
**************************************************

ERYK SMITH

"Most throwing knives only need to be sharpened on the the very point of the blade where it will stick. About one inch from the point along the edge and back edge should do it.

The rest of the blade should be left without a sharpened edge.

This will result in three things:

1. There will be less chipping of your knife edge when the knife does not stick and hits the ground.

2. When your blade strikes another blade already sticking in the target, it will cause less damage with a dull edge.

3. It is much easier to throw a knife by the blade with a dull edge.

Most of the time you will not be sharpening so much as repairing a damaged point or edge..."

CARL GEDDES

"...Generally, the larger the angle the stronger the edge will be. Heavy work knives and axes have a larger angle (24-30 degrees) to accommodate the heavy cutting.

The smaller the angle the more precise the cutting.

Most commercially made knives come from the factory with 15 to 21 degree angles.

(NO ONE AGREES ON THE PROPER ANGLE!)

Throwing knives are another matter, mine are not sharp, except for the point. The same holds true for my hawks. I keep all the edges "round" since I throw from the blade as well as the handle.

On my throwing knives I will use my small Delta grinder to remove the nicks and burrs. It's a great grinder for keeping the heat down when I'm dressing my knives..."

JEFF KOCH

"...I use a second cut or a smooth cut mill file to resharpen the points and edges and remove any burrs on the handles of my throwing knives when they become chipped or dented. I bring a file with me wherever I go to throw.

Just hold the knife down flat on a table or bench with the area you want to file sticking over the edge of it.

Maintain the original angle and profile as you file. Don't worry about totally removing all the deep dents just the burrs around them..."

BURL CARL

"... I hand grind the edges of my knives using a Hitachi 4 1/2" 11 amp angle grinder.

When cutting, or shaping the edge bevel, I use 80 or even 50 grit sanding disks. This works much better than a standard grinding wheel. It's a little more time consuming but will give you much better control.

The angle of the bevel.... I don't know. I don't use any jigs to give a pre set angle. I 'eyeball' the bevels on every knife I make. I judge it by the distance from the edge to where it breaks onto the flat of the blade. This distance is about 5/8" running along the edge.

I also bevel the clip the same way. My definition of the clip = Top of blade starting from the tip to the highest point of the back of the blade. The 'clip' is about 3 1/2 inches long.

Neither the edge of the blade or the 'clip' is sharp (about 1/16" to 1/8" thick running the length of the edge)..."
