1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello fellow throwers!

Its been another great week of knife throwing! I got together with my buddy Scott Sunday afternoon and we went to our friend John's place. John has been throwing for about a month and is almost as hooked on the sport as the rest of us.

John told us about his newest project. A "target wall". He pulled out about 10 feet of small trees and bushes along one side of his yard. And is ready to build an 8 foot high wall made up of a frame and a bunch of 2'X6's. Their will be log rounds hanging at different heights and also a 2X4 and a 4X4 sticking out of the ground to give us some targets that are a little more challenging to throw at.

I know by the time this wall is done their will be all sorts of changes and improvements... I'll be sure to post some pics of it when its finished.

Happy Throwing To All!!!

Until next time...

2. GUEST COLUMN:

RESULTS OF THE "HURLATHON" 2001
by Lee Fugatt

OK, this years 3 day throwfest went off without a hitch! Everyone had a great time in spite of temperatures way up over 104 at the targets!

We can thank Carl Geddes for buying about a million dollars worth of bottled water and ice for the group and also for making at least 4 store runs!

We can thank Rick Lemberg for paying for a lot of the admin stuff and for announcing the event, scoring, and officiating at the awards ceremony.

We had the awards on Sunday morning instead of at the Saturday night dinner cuz everyone was so fried from 8 hours of throwing in 100 F. plus sun anything that would've interfered with the feeding and ice tea drinking frenzy would have been a distraction.

Burl Carl took First in knife throwing Over-all but the scores were very close and he didn't get to relax into his lead even a little bit! I took 2nd (but I was throwing with my right eye closed just to make it fair :-))

Carl Geddes showed us that he is a dangerous contender at the double throw line! Where he gained on Burl so rapidly he was starting to get real nervous!

Kristy and Noah - who are SCA throwers but have never competed in a tournament - did very well considering they were competing with strange knives and tomahawks.

Kristy took 4th in hawks and showed that she is a real thrower in a woman's body :-) Noah took a liking to short throwing spears and was hitting the bull from over 20 feet by the end of Sunday afternoon.

I am glad I didn't give him any chance to practice much before the competition! I placed first in tomahawk and the spear throw. Of course the fact that I am the only one who practices with spears, or even has more than one had nothing to do with that.

I am guessing everyone liked the barbecued lamb and the 2 different kinds of duck, the potato salad, pasta casserole (Made by Burl's wife), the fruit, the brownies, the deep dish apple pie, etc. At least I didn't hear any complaints over the general chomping and lip smacking noises!

Sunday we held sling and atlatl making and throwing classes and everyone got to take home a hand made sling. We even had a demonstration of flint knapping where Noah showed a real skill in making a gorgeous 3" javelin point out of a piece of obsidian!

Mathew Rappaport showed us how to do multiple cracks with a whip. which I thought was very cool!

I want to thank everyone who attended this year for their grace and patience with my humble and primitive efforts at hosting an event. And also to say I feel privileged to be able to associate with such people.

4. GETTING MORE GRIP ON YOUR HANDLES
by Jeff Koch

If the handle on your axe seems too dry and slick and the axe slips out of your hand too soon, this can cause the axe to hit high or go right over your target when you release.

Try applying several coats of linseed oil to the handle, let it dry and then rub some rosin powder on it.

The linseed oil helps seal the wood and if you apply enough coats, over time it gets a tacky feel. It also provides a base for the rosin powder to adhere to.

Some throwers might not want that much grip on their handles but the skin on my palms is usually dry and worn smooth so I need a better grip.

When I throw knives I just use a rosin bag to coat my hands since it won't stick to the knives.

If my hands are really dry and smooth, I have a damp towel with some rosin powder dusted on it hanging on my belt loop and moisten my hand on it when necessary.
