1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello people!

Its been a great 2 weeks! Throwing knives just has a way of putting you in a good mood :)

I got to try out another axe from the designer of the Firestone ThrowingAxe, Arlan D. Lothe. Its not as big as you would expect a throwing axe to be... and that's the best part!

It is the perfect throwing axe if you live in an apartment or like to throw indoors! It's light weight, spins very fast, and doesn't chew up targets like a normal throwing axe does.

For more details or to see a few pictures of the new axe just visit the following link:

http://throwzini.com/throwingaxes.html

And click on the link that says THREE SIZES OF FIRESTONE THROWINGAXES.

Hope everyone has a great two weeks!

Until next time...

TARGETS FOR KNIFE AND TOMAHAWK THROWING
by Scott Gracia

There are quite a few types of targets you can make that work great for knife and tomahawk throwing. Here are a couple easy ones to get you started:

PLANKS OF WOOD
You can make a target out of boards or planks that you have laying around. Always place the grain of your target vertically. The knife or 'hawk will cut into the grain easier this way.

LOG ROUNDS
These are my favorite target to throw at! Get them as wide across as you can. That way you can fit more targets on the face of the log and that will help prolong the life of the target.

If you only have one target on your log, you are always throwing at the same exact spot, (usually a bullseye), and that's one sure way to chew up a target fast!

(If you plan to compete in one of the many throwing events going on throughout the US, the competition standard is a log round atleast 16" across).

If you only plan on throwing knives at your target, you should be able to get away with a section only 4" thick. But if you can get them thicker you should.

When the face gets chewed up, you can just turn the log around. When both sides need replacing you just get a chainsaw and take off a few inches from each side and you have a brand new target!

If you are going to throw axes or hawks then the target will get chewed up alot faster so I would get the thickest stumps you can handle. (Just remember you're going to have to move them and they can get pretty heavy depending on the size)

TYPES OF WOOD
If you use a harder wood your throwers will be more likely to bounce out or not get a good solid stick.

It also depends on the knives/axes you are using. some of them have sharper points and edges and they stick a little better in hard woods. But I suggest always going for a softer type of wood if you have a choice.

My favorite wood to use is a Cottonwood Tree. After it's outside for awhile, getting rained on and soaking up all the moisture, it acts like a "self-healing" dart board. The holes seal up quite a bit after you pull your knives out.

Pine, Palm, Spruce, and Poplar are also softer woods that work great for throwing at.

Stay away from plywood. It will work for some of the smaller throwers but its not the greatest target. Its loud when the knives hit it, your knives will bounce out of it more often than if you're throwing at a log round, and if you throw bigger, heavier knives... they will go right through it!

If you're having trouble finding planks or log rounds you can call a lumber yard or firewood type place. I recently stopped at a lumber mill in Kenosha, WI and the guy told me he would save a bunch of soft wood like Pine and Cottonwood and cut me 12" thick logs, (no smaller than 16" in diameter), for $5 a piece!

The phone company also has crews cutting down trees all the time and cleaning up downed trees after storms. Stop and talk to one of the crew and see what they say.

And finally, use your friends :) Just let them all know that you're looking for stumps. And if they see any on the side of the road to grab them or call you. People cut trees down everyday.

Once the word is out for awhile, you may end up with more targets than you need. But thats a good problem to have :)

Best of luck with your search for the perfect target!!!

4. KNIFE & AXE THROWING EVENT IN GERMANY
By Dieter Fuhrer

For about a year or so there has been a lot of chatting on the 'net about knife and axe throwing in Germany.

A throwers` event has been discussed too. But it looked like it was all NATO... (No Action - Talking Only!).

So I decided that this had to be done and talked Rupert Linder into setting up the whole affair. He has got the space around his home (beautiful site in Upper Bavaria surrounded by meadows and forest) where he`s going to launch a business on traditional archery (which we're also very keen on) and Nordic knives on June 30th, 2001.

It also seemed to be the suitable place and date for a "throwers'meeting" or event. So we went to work and got everything set up.

But understand that we are going to keep it nice and easy because it`s the very first German throwers` meeting. (As far as I know nothing the like has ever taken place in Germany.)

EVENTS
We're planning to have two contests with about 25 participants each.

There will be a knife and an axe contest at three throws each from a minimum distance of 4.50m, or 14' 9".

TARGET
The targets will be 15 cm (almost 6") NFAA archery faces (scoring sticks at 5, 4 and 3 points) attached to a log pyramid.

Participants may choose their distance, (as long as the minimum is kept), the number of turns and even their throwing devices. (No limits on size, weight or form.)

This is just for a start and should bring in some experience on how to set up future events, which I'm sure will follow because people seem to be really interested in the sport.

I hope to see you all there!

Greetings from Dieter
