1. WHAT'S NEW

Fellow Chuckers-of-Steel!

The time has just about arrived... soon we get to go throw knives at the IKTA's World Knife Throwing Championships!

"Where Men Go To Flex Their Steel"! I can't wait!

It's going to be a bit different throwing without 14 layers of clothes on, but I'm hoping it won't make too much of a difference :)

It was almost 40 degrees the other day. So my friend Scott came over to get some practice in. He is also going to be throwing in the event.

We threw knives from 4 different distances.

1/2 Spins from 8 feet.
1 Spin from 12'.
1 - 1/2 Spins from 15'
2 Spins from 18'

We threw 5 knives from each distance.

There was lots of "clanging" steel going on! It was a great time and we both needed the practice... BAD :)

We are leaving Milwaukee a few days before the competition. The event is from the 16th to the 18th, so we'll get a few extra days in the sun!

For more info on this event check out the IKTA page in our EVENTS section.

UPCOMING EVENTS
There is another competition coming up March 26-29. It is the PKT (Pacific Knife Throwers), annual contest. The event will be part of the Wild West Arts Club International Convention and World Championships of the Western Arts.

I wish I could make it to this event too, but its just isn't gonna happen. Maybe next year!

They have a new contest that I think is going to be a big hit! A "Throwers Range" event with teams of 2 throwers competing to complete their throws into several difficult targets in a race for time!

For more details about this new contest check out the PKT section of our EVENTS page

We got quite a few emails from people all over the world that wanted to share their enthusiasm! And questions.(Check out our 2nd article to read one of them).

I also got quite a few emails asking about the Boker Starlight signature throwing knife that John Bailey is giving away. It is one of the only numbered, (1-20), of these great knives! (List price is $150.00)

You do not have to pay or do anything extra to enter the drawings... you just have to be a member of the World Knife Throwers Guild.

If you are one of the first 100 people to join the WKTG you will be considered a CHARTER MEMBER and will be entitled to "possible perks" down the road.

And don't worry, if you don't win a knife this time, there is always the next giveaway! Twice a year, there will be a drawing using member ID numbers!

OTHER UPDATES
When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and a brand new THROWZINI FORUM! The previous message board I was using closed its doors on March 9th.

I am currently working on getting the old messages transferred to the new board, but there is quite a bit of action on the new one already.

The new board has a few main TOPICS. Like EVENTS and TOURNAMENTS, THE BASICS, and a section called LOOKING FOR THROWERS IN YOUR AREA? This one is definitely the busiest TOPIC so far!

So if you want to find throwers in your area or lots of other great ideas just visit our homepage and click on the THROWZINI FORUM link.

Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!!

2. GUEST COLUMN:

DORM ROOM THROWERS
by Kyle Chambers

One day while playing darts one of my roommates mentioned how entertaining knife throwing was. This lead to lengthy discussion on the feasibility of throwing knives in a 12 ft x 13 ft room.

There are strict rules on knife ownership on campus. We initially were planning on using small knives with a blade length of three inches or less to remain legal with campus rules.

One day a Resident Assistant found my roommate's small knife with a 3.5-inch blade and threatened expulsion for possession of a lethal weapon... so we quickly began searching for throwers and targets of a different breed.

We were digging around on the Internet for throwing knives and accessories that might be legal.

An article at The Great Throwzini web site on coat hanger throwers and the use of foam archery targets seemed to fit the bill!

Later when I went to work there happened to be letter opener on one of the office desks. I picked it up by the blade and instantly knew it was perfect for the dorm room!

After work I ran to Wal-Mart to pick up some letter openers and a foam archery target. The letter openers were found in office supplies for around $2.50 each, and to my surprise not a foam archery target anywhere in the store.

My girlfriend who was with me suggested green floral foam used for flower arrangements. Wal-Mart had it at the time for $1.56 for three big blocks.

So I quickly grabbed three and headed home to the dorm.

To my roommates and my surprise, the letter openers throw beautifully! Great 1/2 turn blade throwers from about 9 feet.

The floral foam quickly began to deteriorate due to its somewhat brittle nature. The quick fix for the foam blocks was simply to wrap them in a layer of duct tape.

They have held up just great, and when the duct tape starts to get a little chewed up we simply add another layer or patch the holes with smaller squares of tape.

4. IS THERE A PLACE FOR ME IN THE WKTG?
by Cntrldy

This is Cntryldy writing to you with a question. But first let me say that the guild sounds like a wonderful idea!

My question is, who can be a member in it?

As you know, I am a rank amateur. But I would like to see the sport become more well known and respected as such, one with established principles.

I think, by establishing it's principles, this would help to direct and to secure and protect it's future.

I would hate, for example, to see knife throwing become popular and then degenerate into a "ninja" or "James Bond" type mindset.

Our American culture right now seems bent towards these kinds of unprincipled forms of entertainment, especially with the younger generation.

Fashioning this sport so that people can feel comfortable being associated with it (not that they don't now.... what I mean is the larger cross section of people who are not now familiar with it at all) and also can be able to relate to, would be a wonderful and unique accomplishment.

Before I began reading your newsletter on the web, if someone told me that they were a knife thrower, I would back away from them as quickly as possible.

Now I can accept that it's actually a fun and easy pastime you can enjoy in your own backyard, just like we neighborhood kids used to do in Ohio.

It's also not too expensive unless you want it to be, which also makes it accessible to a wide range of people. (This seems, very 'American' to me. - am I getting carried away here?)

Plus there is a history behind it that is interesting, whether you look at early American History, or even the early history of mankind.

Knives have been thrown since the first one was invented. (Hmmm...could be an interesting paper for a history student to do research on.)

It's exciting to watch this evolve. I hope all goes well. Knowing the nature of people, well...things could also get complicated, right?

Anyway, again I ask if someone like myself can be a member in the new guild?

What are the responsibilities and/or obligations?

I am a little timid, I suppose, because I doubt there are other middle age lady knife throwers. It feels sort of like being the neighborhood tom girl looking at a sandlot baseball game with all boys.

Is there really a place for me here?

Sincerely,
