GUEST COLUMN: INTRODUCING THE WORLD KNIFE THROWERS GUILD by John Bailey We are pleased to announce the beginning of the first edition of The Great Throwzini/World Knife Throwers Guild (W.K.T.G.) online Newsletter! We are looking forward to having an outlet for all the knife throwers in the world, all the clubs, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, designers, entertainers, competitors, everyone involved in knife throwing in any manner. The mission of the newsletter will be to work as a global home for ALL the clubs throughout the world who, (whether or not they already have an online presence), can now reach a larger audience of (over 4,500 throwers) and counting. A place to make their information known to the world. To post dates of events, membership applications, awards and recognition from ALL clubs. To post rules of the individual clubs and amendments to those rules or comments about them. An outlet to vent grievances or to praise those organizations/ or individuals who deserve it. To help anyone who is seeking more information on starting a club of their own, or who wants to hear the view from people about existing organizations and their satellite clubs. Here manufacturers can introduce their new knives, answer questions about knife making materials and what they offer. Custom knife makers can freely talk about their knifes quality or the materials and explain their craft. A place for retail dealers to introduce new products. In general, a place where the whole world can come, under one banner, and be "united" in the sport of knife throwing in ALL its aspects. The (W.K.T.G.) is not out to compete with other clubs but merely highlight their achievements. We are looking forward to making, The Great Throwzini, World Knife Throwers Guild, newsletter a success for everyone involved. If you have any comments please direct them to myself or Scott and we will look into smoothing out any rough spots. All members will be given there own I.D. number. A NEW TORPEDO THROW by Burl Carl Incase some of you haven't seen Cold Steel's Torpedo, its a big spike sharpened on both ends. It is 15" in length and comes in 2 sizes, 3/4" diameter and 1" diameter. You can throw these overhand but they are a bit heavy and your arm will definitely feel it after a while. So try throwing them underhand. SHORT DISTANCE THROWS Use a "bowling style" throw. The release action, and follow through, is just like making a hook shot in bowling. (Watch how a pro bowler releases the ball when he makes a hook shot.) The "bowler" throw/release is primarily for short distances. This allows the thrower to really crank it. Timing of the release is EVERYTHING on a hard, fast throw. Let the torpedo roll off your finger tips as you're completing your upswing. It should be leaving your finger tips before your hand comes up to your waste level. If you let go about waste high it'll probably go ballistic on you! Duck into your bomb shelter to avoid getting hit with the thing :) When throwing it with this technique remember to complete the follow through by bringing your hand up to the side of your face, (like your brushing your hair back on the side of your head). This puts a murderous spiral effect to the sucker and stabilizes it. If done correctly, it literally drills itself into the target! LONG DISTANCE THROWS It's especially effective for distance shots without killing your shoulder like an overhand throw will do. For distance shots try a slow pitch (like softball or horseshoes). It's better because the arm will reach out and away from your body. This allows better control of the lob shot. The torpedo will more than likely spin end over end when released this way but when you're done throwing... you'll still have a shoulder left! If the above is getting too confusing, try this example: Imagine picking up a football from the ground. Simply toss it underhand to your friend who is standing a few feet away from you. This is the same motion as done with the torpedo, (less the friend standing in front of you).
