1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello everyone,

I have lots to talk about this time! So I'll get right to it!

NEW LOOK
The Great Throwzini now has a logo! So I just had to add it to the site :) Not a huge change, just a small improvement! (Let me know what you think???)

DRAGON KNIVES
Recently the price went up on the Professional Target Dragons due to increased laser cutting costs. But John Goss, (President of Dragon Knives), felt that if you're paying more, you should get more.

So he upgraded the paint to a thicker more durable blend, and also improved the handle design.

The handles used to be very "square" and they would get burrs on them when other knives were bounced off of them.

Now the handle has a very slight taper to it, so the edges aren't as pronounced. So when you're doing your Robin Hood impression and you slam your knife off of one that's already in the target, the knife will slide off a bit easier without doing as much damage.

For more details on these awesome throwers, check out the following link:

http://www.throwzini.com/protargdragdesc.html

(Burrs are a common problem for those of us that tend to ricochet knives off of things besides the wooden target. Check out the QUICK IDEA on our homepage to learn an easy way to get rid of them.)

OTHER UPDATES
When you visit the site you'll also notice lots of interesting new posts on our Great Throwzini Discussion Forum! Be sure to check them out!

UPCOMING EVENTS
There are 2 events coming up!!! Both of them are in March, and both of them are sure to be a great time!

One of them is being held by the IKTA, (International Knife Throwing Alliance) and the other by the PKT, (Pacific Knife Throwers).

Great people, exciting new events and even more cool prizes! Sounds like a blast! (I wish I could attend both of them! No chance for that. But I will be attending the IKTA event!!! Its going to rock! :)

2. GUEST COLUMN:

GETTING READY FOR WINTER
by Michael Gerety

No excuses this weekend, gotta clean up the leaves!

I raked everything out of the corners and out to where I could reach it with the mower, to bag it up and throw it on the compost pile.

As I cleaned from around the targets in the back yard I started moving a little faster. If I get this done quickly I will still have enough daylight to do some "chuckin".

Finished by 2:30!

And I built two new targets to boot! I used some new rounds that a tree surgeon/arborist buddy of mine dropped off for me this week.

And a couple of solid topped pallets that I found in a pile marked "free" at a local pallet making company some time last week.

Using some 6 inch Pole Barn spikes, (the ones with the ratchet rings), I nailed from the back of the pallet to the back of the round! Which I had trimmed down to about 14 inches thick.

These will put up with some abuse. So I dug out my heavy duty 'hawks'. (The ones with the metal handles)

It felt good!

I then rooted around until I found my pile of circular saw blades. I've hammered the teeth level all the way around to make them safer to throw.

The three ways of throwing the saw blades that I practice are: overhand, underhand, and Frisbee style. The blades are fun to throw and you can tell when you get a solid hit because they ring like a bell.

I pulled out some of my javelins for a few throws. I don't have enough room to use the atlatl in my back yard. But the solid 'thunk' of the short spears sinking 2 inches into a target is very satisfying.

You've got to take advantage of the time you can find. Its akin to "Stopping to smell the roses" which I often remind my wife to do.

Well it's time to clean out the garage and get enough room to set up the indoor target for the small knives, spikes, shurikens and the blow guns! (We'll be down to that soon as the snow flies.)

For a challenge try throwing 3 or 4 inch finish nails into foam targets, it develops a soft touch and a 'finess' for balance.

Well time for bed, its been a great day. Hope yours has been as fun!

Remember to practice throwing safety... "cuz ax catching sucks!"

4. WATCH OUT MR. SNOWMAN!
by Garry Montgomery

I wonder who else has found such a fun way to throw in Winter in snow country...

I had just finished building a great snowman - seven feet tall, carrot nose, prunes for buttons and as I stuck my cap on his head I glanced back at the house and saw all these icicles hanging from the gutter.

My first thought was, "Man, that big one hanging over the front door could fall on somebody and do some damage!" so I walked over, reached up and snapped off the dangling, stiletto-shaped piece of nature's handiwork.

I hefted it in my palm and found that it balanced pretty darn well. It was about 15 inches long, sharp at one end and about an inch in diameter at the blunt end, sooooo ...

Yep! Mr Snowman got it right in the midriff!

It stuck perfectly!

From that point on, I progressed around the house snapping off stilettos and tried to estimate the distance to my Snowman target and decide whether to throw from the tip or the butt.

I'd say that at least 50% of my guesses were right on and most of them stuck. All I need now is for a little thaw and an overnight freeze so I can get more of those really great throwers and have some more fun in the snow. Hey, who needs snowballs!

BUT these suckers are dangerous, so don't use them instead of snowballs with other folk around AND if you have kids, make sure they understand the difference between a snowball fight and an icicle stiletto as a weapon!
