1. WHAT'S NEW

Hi everyone! It has stopped snowing and the temps are actually warming up... FINALLY!!! Forty-nine inches of snow in thirty days is just too much!

I can't wait for Spring, throwing in the mud just doesn't sound that bad right now.

Anyway, I had another great "throwing party" last week. I invited my Mom, her new husband Rich, and of course my sister, the future "Throwzini"!

Little did they know they were going to be throwing knives in a spare bedroom of our apartment :)

I explained the basics to Rich and "THUNK", he stuck the very first knife he threw!! (I love it when that happens!!!)

My Mom did great also. Only a couple minutes of practice and she was scoring points! They both did great and it was an awesome time!

It was another great day throwing with my family. And there was only one casualty... a low hanging light bulb cover!

But we won't bring up who did that, right Mom? ;)

Until next time... Keep On Chuckin'!

2. GUEST COLUMN:

A DAY WITH THE "MASTER OF THE BLADE"
by Carl B. Geddes

It was a typical winter day in Phoenix. The air temperature hovered near 70o. Despite the chill in the air, I was ready to meet the Master, Bob Karp.

I had made arrangements to take a throwing lesson with Bob while my wife visited some of her clients in Phoenix.

Since I've only been throwing for nine months I knew there was a lot to learn. Bob didn't let me down.

Phoenix is a knife thrower's paradise! Every where you look there is dead palm tree just begging to have someone come along with a chain saw and whack off a "round."

I immediately regretted that I flew to Phoenix rather than driven my truck. For those of you who haven't thrown into Palm you don't know what you are missing. It's great stuff! Naturally Bob's target was Palm Wood.

Next came the knives. Even though I had brought along my own knives, (Karp Throwers), Bob brought a few "things" he thought I might enjoy throwing.

Things like spikes, tomahawks and, of course, a huge selection of knives of all shapes and sizes.

I was right when I told my wife, a boy does need plenty of different types of things to throw!

Bob has hundreds of throwing knives and tomahawks. It makes my measly collection of 110 seem like nothing. Now I have a real perspective for my wife! I really do need hundreds more!!!

Bob started the lesson slowly. I think it had something to do with my ability to learn, but he assured me that it wasn't the stupid look on my face.

First he brought out a "few" throwing knives, spikes, and tomahawks and other sharp things and gave me a demonstration of what could be done with knives in the hands of an expert.

Bob can stick knives from anywhere! Half spins, full spins, one and half spins, two spins, palm throws, you name it, he sticks it!

After his demonstration, Bob watched me throw and was able to give me very specific things that immediately improved my throwing.

He gave me very good and very specific "tools" to take to my practice sessions. I would recommend Bob Karp throwing lessons to anyone that wants to improve their throwing. If you are serious about throwing, see Bob when you are in the Phoenix area.

Bob was most generous with his time and patience. He's an easy guy to like. After just a few minutes I felt I knew him most of my life.

He also gave me a "bonus" while I was in Phoenix. I collect custom knives, and Bob arranged for me to visit his friend, one the premier custom knife maker's in the world, D'Alton Holder!

Like Bob, D' and his wife Patti were most gracious hosts. While my wife and Patti visited, D' and Bob took me on a tour of D's shop. Although I'm an old guy, I felt like a kid in a candy shop!

The Holder's invited complete strangers, my wife and I, into their home and treated us as friends. Hospitality seems to be part of the knife culture.

People have called Bob Karp the Master of the Blade. And, although he is a superb knife thrower, he is more than that, Bob is a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

A visit with Bob Karp will enrich your life.

Good throwing to all!

4. MORE AWESOME THROWERS FROM DRAGON KNIVES
by John Goss
I have many new design changes which take throwing knives into a new realm of quality and durability.

DRAGON COLLECTOR 2000
The Dragon Collector 2000 came about from a meeting in a deluxe hotel room in Las Vegas. It was during a dinner break at the World Championship, put on by the International Knife Throwing Alliance.

I went around the informal party and asked all the throwers present what qualities they would like in the ideal throwing knife.

The rule is that a knife must be 12 inches or longer and should be made of 3/16 inch thick material. Other than that it is pretty much up to the individual's preference.

After making drawings and writing 5 pages of possible requests I went back to the Dragon prototype workshop. After many weeks, a dozen different knife designs were tested and redesigned.

I called and e-mailed some of the best knife throwers to be found. Pat Minter, Lee Fugatt, Scott Gracia, Rick Lemberg, David Smith and Burl Carl are some examples of the throwers contacted.

Believe me, these men make knives and/or throw them at an unbelievable level of professionalism.

I made the Dragon Collector 2000 so the best knife throwers had the best knives! The collector is a great blade or handle thrower designed for professional target use.

It is the perfect addition for the serious thrower or collector.

But I find that many, if not all the great throwers want a knife with more velocity and impact potential. For that I have designed a knife for boar hunting, (an animal also known in the Southwest as the Havalina.)

THE DRAGON BOAR HUNTER
This is a handle thrower that can be thrown up to 50 feet. This knife has a one inch round handle welded on to the blade with most of the weight in the tip of the knife.

The boar hunter is made of AS 86 saw steel as are all Dragon Knives and Axes.

In my opinion all the throwers are going to be pleasantly surprised with the power and the deep stick achieved with the Dragon Boar Hunter.

These knives are beautiful but durable, don't be afraid to throw them hard. They have a lifetime warranty against any damage.

The paint might wear but the knives will stick forever!

Best Regards,
John Goss
