1. WHAT'S NEW

WINTER IS HERE!!! The temps have dropped into the 30's now... talk about a quick way to end a good time! Holding on to freezing cold steel isn't the most comfortable thing I've ever done! (Be sure to check out the QUICK IDEAS section on our homepage to find a way around this problem.)

I was hoping it would stay warm for just a bit longer. Even 1 more day! (Now is the time we throwers regret not going outside to throw on all those bright, sunny days past :)

NEW KNIVES
I just got some new throwers from Lee Fugatt. The design is based on the Norse Scramaseax.

One of my new throwers is 12" X 1 1/4" and the others are 14 1/2" X 2".

You definitely don't have to worry about the wind when throwing the larger model! It weighs in at 1 lb. 4 ounces, (572grams)! And the smaller 12" version at just over 11.5 ounces, (327 grams).

As usual, great job Lee!

OTHER UPDATES
When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and lots of interesting new posts on our Great Throwzini Discussion Forum! Be sure to check them out!

Like the one from shullville@aol.com, who explains how he made his first thrower from a butcher knife!

To read the entire message or lots of other great ideas just visit our homepage and click on the THROWZINI FORUM link.

UPCOMING EVENT
There's plenty of time to plan for this one. Its not until March, 2001.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the IKTA will not be held in conjunction with the WWAC like in previous years.

It sounds like its going to be quite an event!!!

If you want to find out how to get in on some of the $2,000 in prize money, just go to our home page and click on the EVENTS link. And then on the IKTA link.

Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!!

One more thing... Have a Happy/Safe Turkey-Day!

MORE GREAT IDEAS FOR HOMEMADE THROWERS
by Michael Gerety

My name is Michael Gerety and I have made a hobby of putting metal down range in one form or another for as long as I can remember.

I'm known among my friends as being able to pick up and stick items that usually wouldn't be thought of as "throwable", like finishing nails under 2".

It all started the day I saw my Dad throw a "double-bitted ax" into a dead tree from two rotations away! This was very impressive to me because at the time the ax was as tall as I was!

After that my Dad was wondering how come the hatchet handles kept cracking so easily??? (Couldn't have been the workout that I was giving them throwing them into the side of the wood pile :)

He also wondered where all the screwdrivers disappeared to... (Those would be in the spaces of the woodpile!).

I am now 39 and have no children of my own and therefore have not had to grow up too much. I have a knife throwing range in my garage and a couple of tree rounds on legs in the backyard.

I have a group of friends that really like to "go play at Mikeys" as well as my nephew does. I was teaching his mother double rotations by the time she was ten with a 10" thrower...

I think he'll be doing it sooner!

TARGETS
The best indoor targets for me have been 4'x 8' sheets of industrial roofing insulation with a full sheet standing against the wall and a 2'x 4' section attached in the center for the actual target area.

Then another piece laid sideways on the floor to catch the knives thrown by my less experienced friends or my 6 year old nephew, who is a cracker of a tomahawk thrower and is getting better at the knives.

THROWERS
I have a homemade collection of throwing items running from 3" - 12" spikes, (some double-ended), to various knives 6" - 13" in length.

I also have throwing stars, 3 pointed to 8 pointed, as well as my "chuckers" made from telephone pole washers, the big four sided 2" ones! Which I must say throw great and can really take a beating.

I throw these like a baseball complete with curve! But not into foam targets cause they tend to eat them up.

I've been making my own throwing implements for years, and have looked to the trash piles in my town for many of the raw materials needed.

I have found that the metal stretcher used in a chain link fence, (you know the piece that slides into the links to attach it to the pole), can be cut into any length needed and is already 3/4" - 3/16".

Cut it to the length you want and then hold the end you want pointed at a 45 degree angle to the side of a grinder or belt sander and slowly turn. This gives you a point that will take lots of abuse and is easy to clean up when necessary.

And it sticks just as well into foam as it sticks into "end grain" targets like a log round.

I make a lot of my own throwing axes and tomahawks in what I refer to as down and dirty expendable manner. That way when you break one you just fix it or make another.

I've made torpedo style throwing spikes out of rebar of varying sizes. I like 7" x 3/8", then I just polish the whole thing with a coarse compound, leaving the bumps for texture and let it slide out on the release.

I've also used long drift pins that I bought at one of those dollar stores and ground to a point for throwing.

Sorry to spew so much, just a little excited to find that I'm not alone in my hobby.

An item that wasn't on your list for favorite throwers that my friends and I really like to throw, is circular saw blades.

Under hand works best but only into wooden targets. The foam ones can't take it.

I've also experimented with javelins and atlatl throwing sticks but have found that my "bungee cord thrower" gives the best distance.

All it takes is a little imagination and an eye for basic safety and you can have a lot of fun.

(Without putting anyones eyes out Mom :)

Happy Throwing To All!!!

4. BACK TO REALITY
by Jason Chasse

I was feeling kind of off center and down in the dumps recently so I said to myself,

"Time to find myself again and remember the person I used to be when dreams meant something".

So I put on my cammies and strapped on the knives and headed out the door for the woods. Next thing I knew I was in "James Bond Land"!

Every tree was an enemy spy and every noise was an ambush in the works!

I realize that this is silly but it actually helped. When I came out of the woods I felt better and it seemed that I was closer to being balanced then I had been all day.

Just to make this all "legal", yes I did throw at things and the blades stuck too... most of the time :)
