Contact Info/Reprint Guidelines ======================================= 1. WHAT'S NEW The beginning of the end... of outdoor knife throwing :( Winter is approaching fast. It actually snowed here yesterday! I couldn't believe it. These WI Summers go by way too fast! I guess I'll have to start setting up the indoor range again. A few thick foam archery targets on one wall, and a bunch of broken down cardboard boxes duct taped together on the other, and we're ready to throw! Anyway, if you're not lucky enough to live somewhere where its warm all year round, then you might want to make it a point to get out and throw a few more times before its too late. Pretty soon your targets will be covered in snow :) UPCOMING EVENT OK, this is it, the last reminder before the big event. The 5th Annual AKTA National Championships is being held Oct. 13-14th, in Awendaw, SC. There's still time to sign up for a chance to win over $1000 in cash and prizes!!! If you want more details just click on the EVENTS link on our homepage, and then the AKTA link. Good Luck to everyone who is participating! OTHER UPDATES When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and lots of interesting new posts on our Great Throwzini Discussion Forum! GUEST COLUMN: TRIMMING THE DRAGON'S EARS by Doug Allen I was throwing a couple of the 10.5 inch Dragon Knives, (definitely blade throwers), when I started wondering if they wouldn't make good handle throwers if the ears on the pommel were removed. I found I could control the half turn by varying my grip. And I was nailing the target at 8' to 11' just by controlling the rate of spin. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad about the knives as they are. But I like to throw by the handle too, and I like to throw from 13' to 18'. So I clipped the Dragon's ears... and I love it! It didn't change the blade throwing at all and now it is a great handle thrower too. Here's what I did: *I continued the natural curve of the handle as the line to cut on. I cut the ears off with a dremel cutting disk and polished the cuts on a 150 grit sanding disk. This knife is versatile. I'm throwing from 8' out to nearly 20' with some overlap of either blade or handle throwing. By the way, I think anyone who doesn't own some Dragon Knives is really missing out. I love them all and think they're some of the best knives I've ever thrown. To quote my twin grandsons, "they're awesome!". A SIDE THOUGHT ON TARGETS Indoors I am often throwing very light knives, like those cheapies from Pakistan, and home made spikes. Our local WalMart sporting goods section has archery target cores. They have a five ring BullsEye 10 inches across, and are made of "self-sealing" foam. They're $4.50 each. I bought a couple and I've been throwing all sorts of stuff at them and they hold up well. I just mounted them on a piece of plywood with two wood screws each from the back. EMAIL FROM A READER Below is an email message I received from one of our sites first contributors. Joe has lots of great ideas when it comes to making throwers/spikes or customizing other knives for "soon-to-be" throwers. Hope you enjoy it... CLEAVERS, TORPEDOES and SWING-BLADES... OH MY! by Joe Aimetti I get the opportunity to visit the Smoky Mountain Knife Works about once a year when my wife and I go to Tennessee to visit the in-laws. It is there where I find a lot of "raw material" for my home brew throwers, as in modifying the less expensive Pakistani knives. I recently finished a modification project to 3 bowie knives based on an article I read on Mike Rapaport's Thrower page. They are hefty for their size and I am still working on a new target so I have not "tested" them yet. I just picked up several of the new Cold Steel throwers, including their Tru-Flight model. I also picked up a Hibben throwing ax... pretty but a bit too small and light for me. PROJECTS I like the idea of the "meat cleaver thrower" that *Ed Sackett wrote about in your ARTICLES section. I may have to make some hefty versions of them. I also finished up my first prototype double-pointed spike (IE: like the CS Torpedo) and am working out the bugs now. My latest idea is a "swing-blade" thrower, kind of like a bola with three knife blades attached in such a way that when one blade hits the target, the other two whip into it also. I will be sure to send you pictures soon as I get them finished. Well, that's all for now. Take care and be sure to keep the pointy end down range.
