Back inside to our indoor ranges. Small knives and only a couple spins. But there's a good side to this... when the weather starts cooling off, that means the AKTA's, annual National Championships is coming up! With over $1000 in cash and prizes its going to be a great event! Some of the best knife throwers around will be there, and also lots of new throwers. It's a great experience for anyone interested in our great sport! Whether you have been throwing for a week or a decade, you won't want to miss this! And it's only 1 month away! For more details just click on the EVENTS link on our home page. GUEST COLUMN: A GAME CALLED "SPLIT THE TARGET" by Dave Cox I hope everyone isn't getting sick of hearing from me :) But this time instead of a question I have a pretty good idea for a game. You can use axes, hatchets, hawks and even knives. When I first started throwing I got some Pine rounds about 3-4" thick. These were ok for awhile using small knives, but they started to dry out and crack. I was throwing my old 12" hatchet from Boy Scouts and I hurled one in the bullseye and started a crack. At this point my son came out and wanted to throw, so we decided to work on the crack and see if we could split it down the middle. We had a blast and split it in half in 12 throws! I asked my Pine round source if he could cut me another 4 targets, but 1 foot thick this time so they wouldn't split as easy. I also had him cut a few more 4" rounds so I could play my new game with the hatchet! 10 throws is my best so far. You can also get the rounds cut to 2" and see how long it takes to split it using your knives. This is a fun game if you have access to plenty of Pine rounds. LETTER FROM A THROWER I have been talking with Carl for quite a few months now and have learned one thing for sure... he is going to be a worthy competitor when he starts entering some knife throwing events! He also has lots of good fishing tips :) Thanks for sharing the knowledge Carl!!! A FEW TARGET IDEAS by Carl Geddes My targets are Palm Tree rounds. Palm wood is soft, so the knife sticks easily. Palm also lasts fairly well when you only throw knives. I can get about 3 months of regular, three times a week, throwing before I need to replace the rounds. I mounted the rounds with 6" lag screws which I screwed in from the back so I wouldn't hit any metal with my knives. The other piece of wood that you see in the middle of the targets is Eucalyptus. It's a harder wood that I use to "catch" tomahawks. As you know, tomahawks really tear up a target quickly. The harder Eucalyptus holds up much better than the Palm when you are throwing tomahawks. Also, since I have a narrow throwing alley I mounted my targets on a "gate-like" affair that swivels out of the way when I'm not throwing. *The old guy in the photo is me.
