The weather was perfect and the mosquitos weren't bad either. On Saturday my friend Scott came over and we threw my 14 inch "Ugly Knives", made by Lee Fugatt. We were using a brand new, BIG, log target. About 26" across, so of course we had to draw a few "aiming points" on it. Some people call them cartoons, I call them "Aiming Points"! So anyway, we mustered up all of our artistic ability and ended up with a frog (5pts for a direct hit), an elephant (10pts), and a space ship (15pts), to choose from. We also drew a fly buzzing around the frogs head, it was about the size of a dime, and he was worth 100 pts. We were throwing 3 knives from about 12'. The first person to 150 pts wins. It sounds pretty basic but we had a blast!!! We even hit that fly a few times too! I think 4 times between the 2 of us. (4 out of 1000... not too bad :) Well, I hope everyone is having a great Summer! And as a friend of mine once told me... "Keep the pointy end down range!" OTHER UPDATES When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and lots of great new posts on our Throwzini Discussion Forum! Be sure to check them out! NEW TARGET PIC I received another submission of a great outdoor target design. It is a picture of David Adamovich's knife throwing set up. There are 2 reasons David's target is a great type of set-up. See if you can tell why... Too check it out just click on the TARGETS link, and then click on OUTDOOR TARGETS. It is called "David's Targets". http://www.throwzini.com Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!! ======================================== 2. GUEST COLUMN: THE DAY AFTER THE HURLATHON by Chuck Fogarty Many throwing events don't really have a "Day After". If the contest is held indoors as the IKTA event or outdoors in a park or public area as Rick Lemberg's PKT events, the areas are reserved in advance and are in use the next day. If it's an outdoor area, the throwers usually have helped erect the targets and all pitch in to tear it down and help the holder of the event to cleanup and get everything shipshape. When events are held on private property such as Lee Fugatt's Hurlathon, (Now called the West Coast Master's Open), or Bobby Branton's AKTA contest in S. Carolina you are welcome to stay around the next day and throw some more and experiment with various knives and other exotic type throwers. We did this at Lees. Rick Lemberg had to leave because of business and Dave Delgado's knees were sore so that left the 3 of us; Matt Rapaport, Lee Fugatt and myself. We threw each others knives and hawks, Matt and Lee cracked the whips and I also took a quick turn at the whips. I did fine at the start but being ambidextrous I foolishly tried it left handed and not only couldn't crack it that way, when I went back to my right hand, I had lost the touch and not a sound was made. We threw the ring, the weapon that Zena made famous, a large heavy circular piece of steel with a cutout center where your finger goes to give it direction. I also tried a Cold Steel Torpedo, a long, very heavy slender piece of steel pointed at each end. They are both fairly easy to throw. A couple of misses with the ring and we got the action down, not great accuracy, but enough to stick in the target. The torpedos are great fun, a little more forgiving being pointed at both ends, but they are so heavy, (the larger one weighs 2 lbs), that after a few throws your arm says,"enough already"! Matt had bought 5 John Goss Dragon throwers and we played with them awhile, we all agreed that they were truly impressive throwing knives. This was our 4th successive day of heavy duty throwing and around 11:00 we decided that was enough. Matt and I packed up our stuff and took off in his truck for Petaluma. I stayed overnight before flying to my sons home in San Diego the next day. There was another day after for me because we threw at Matt's target for awhile. The next morning Matt gave me a lesson on the atlatl. It's really quite difficult to throw. The atlatl itself is a balanced, actually "tuned" stick about 18 in. long. It is notched and fits into a groove in the dart which is 5 to 6 feet long. We were throwing from 60 ft and Matt, of course, lined dart after dart into the target. I threw my 1st few into the ground about 20 ft from our throwing point but gradually overcame my hook and after quite a few throws hit the target! *Matt has a truly great target consisting of 4 huge tree rounds in a 1-2-1 pattern. Then facing the other way, about a dozen bales of hay which he uses for the atlatl target. Thanks for listening and I just want to say, "COMPETE IN AN EVENT"! Don't worry about how you do. Just throwing with these great throwers and putting a face to the names we see on the Throwers List makes it worthwhile. You will come away a better thrower too because if you ask for advice you will get it. And you'll see how hard it is to give advice because everyone's throwing style is so different. Until next time... Article Contributed by: Chuck - Travelling Knife Throwing Reporter - Fogarty thechuckster@webtv.net * Matt's target was mentioned in our last issue. To check it out just click on the TARGETS link, and then click on OUTDOOR TARGETS. It is called "Matt's Targets". http://www.throwzini.com ============================================= 3. WARMING UP YOUR SHOULDER BEFORE THROWING Before I went to Germany, last Sept. I had to get my shoulder in shape. I did it with acupuncture. This I found was the only way to fix it that really works, and lasts. That was after making five visits to the Dr. for cortisone shots in one year. WARM UPS As for warm-ups, I start with underhand throws with a 28oz. knife. I do that for about five minutes at the 12-13', one spin line. Then I move back to the 20' or so, two spin line, (still under-hand.) When I retrieve the knives, I walk back to the line wind-milling my arm with a knife in my hand, a few rotations in each direction. Then I return back to the 12' line and throw a "slow" over-hand throw, for about 5 minutes. If I want to warm up before I go out to throw, I use a knife, hammer or weight, and do some "slow" windmill rotations. Then I hold the knife, hammer or weight, over my head and bend at the elbow allowing my hand to touch the back of my neck. These exercises, only work my shoulder loose; to get the rest of me up and moving is another story!
