Contact Info/Reprint Guidelines ======================================= 1. WHAT'S NEW Hello Throwers, What a week its been! There was a huge storm here last Sunday. A tornado hit a few miles from us. We had no power, no phone and no cable from Sunday night til Friday night. 2 of the 3 doors to our apartment were blocked by fallen trees! There was even 1 on the roof! It was pretty crazy! Now if you're anything like me, by now your thinking... "TARGETS!!!" They are everywhere! All the people that don't keep the wood to burn just put it out on the side of the road for the Power Company to come and pick up. But if you get there before the Power Company does... all you have to do is pick the ones that aren't too heavy to lift :) All the cool logs are always WAY too heavy. You know, the ones that are about 36" across and 2' thick! Well, there is a "whole-lotta" trees and branches to cut, and targets to make. So I'm outta here... Keep on chuckin'! OTHER UPDATES When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and lots of great new posts on our Great Throwzini Discussion Forum! Be sure to check them out! TARGET PIC I also got a submission of another great outdoor target design. It is a picture of Matthew Rapaport's knife throwing/atlatl target outside his home in CA. Too check it out just click on the TARGETS link, and then click the OUTDOOR TARGETS link. It is called "Matt's Targets". http://www.throwzini.com Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!! ======================================== 2. GUEST COLUMN: CHOOSING A THROWING KNIFE - Part 3 of 3 by Matthew Rapaport Continued From Issue #16 There are also more expensive and higher quality hand made, or at least mostly hand made throwers from such names as Branton, Lee, Karp, McEvoy, Moeller, and a few others. They are nice knives, fun to throw, and can run anywhere from $25 to $175 each. You can find listings for places to buy all of these knives, (except the blackjack), in our catalogs and custom pages. BACK TO BALANCE OK, so why so much talk about balance in the first place? Well it works this way... A knife will spin about its center of gravity. If you have a 12 inch knife balanced in its exact center, it will make a circle with a 6 inch radius, a 12 inch circle. Suppose you take the 12 inch knife that is balanced at 4 inches from one end? It will make a circle with an 8 inch radius, a 16 inch circle. Now if you throw both knives with the same forward speed, (say from the handle), it will take the second knife a little longer to make a full 16 inch circle than the first knife does a 12 inch circle. So if the center-balanced knife hits perfectly at 12 feet for your throw, the off-balance knife will hit at 13 feet or perhaps a little more. So what? So nothing. That is the point. The off-balance knife will be just as consistent in its behavior, (assuming it is heavy enough), as the balanced knife. The only other issue is this: If you pick up a longer or shorter balanced knife, you will have only one variation to worry about. A 12 inch knife will describe a 12 inch circle, a 14 inch knife will make a 14 inch circle, and an 8 inch knife will make an 8 inch circle. This will NOT be true of off-balanced knives because the size of their circle depends not only on how long the knife is, but also on where it is balanced. Therefore, changing from one off-balance knife to another requires an adjustment in 2 parameters. It isn't that it can't be done, it's just a little harder. And that, my friend, is the story! "SKILLED KNIFE-BOUNCING" by Big Mike (When I read this message I knew I had to include it in here somewhere :) It was a message between a few throwing friends on the NorthEast Thrower's List... S. Gracia). Hi Guys, Well I hear through the grapevine that David is coming through RI next week. I think he is coming to show off his knife throwing ability. If that is the case, I have to worn him that I am one of the best "knife-bouncing" Champions in the world!!! Not everyone can throw a two and a half pound knife at a target and get it to come back to them. Or hit your friends house for that matter. To some this may sound like an easy task, but take my word for it... Leave it to the pros, we know what we're doing. We are trained professionals and the skill of "knife- bouncing" is not a JOKE!!! It is a serious skill that only a small few can do. So if you do come to RI Dave, I will be happy to train you with my knife throwing ability and or skills. Harry already knows my true talent and will not even try to compete with my skills as a professional "knife-bouncer". So David beware! I do not take knife bouncing lightly. It is a serious art!!! And with that I will say Thank You fellow knife throwers for your time...
