ANOTHER WAY TO COMPENSATE FOR OVER ROTATION
By Burl Carl

Most throwers will tell you to check the position of the handle when the knife hits the target (ie. handle up or handle down). Handle up move a step forward you're too far back, handle down take a step back because you're too close.

This is pretty sound advice BUT...I'll let you in on a little secret I figured out a recently. You don't necessarily have to take that step forward or backward to adjust for correct angle of impact to the target.

Typically a double spin throw is made from about 18 or 19 feet (sorry, I don't know metric equivalents). In tournaments (in the U.S.) we are required to throw knives ranging in length from 12 inches to 16 inches. These longer blades are easier to control and happen to be just about the right length when thrown from 18 to 19 feet for the double spin.

Problem is when you throw from the 18 foot line you can't take a step forward to compensate for over rotated spins (blade down when it hits the target). The only thing I've heard others say is to 'choke up' on the handle (move your hand closer to the mid point of the knife). This works to slow the rotation down a bit so the knife hits the target straight on.

There is an easier way to compensate for over rotation than 'choking up' on the handle. On windup simply pull your throwing arm back a little farther before you start your throw. What is actually happening when you bring your arm back farther (for me at least) is that it increases the acceleration of the knife towards the target.

By using the same rotation rate as I usually do AND increasing the forward motion (two separate forces combined in one throw) the knife arrives at the target point first. In simpler terms, If the knife is over rotating, speed it up. Bringing the arm back at windup allows me to increase the speed of the knife when I throw.

I found this out the hard way at the last 3 tournaments I competed in and it shows on my double spin scores. When I get tired and don't concentrate on bringing my arm back farther I bang and clang a lot of knives off the target. As soon as I bring my arm back a few inches more...thunk, they stick straight in.
