Hello Throwers!

A QUICK REVIEW OF THE RMKTA THROW
(Rocky Mountain Knife and Tomahawk Alliance)
by Mike Bainton

We got back to Austin, TX this morning after an all night drive. It was absolutely beautiful in Creede, Colorado as always. Mike Kolisch put on another fine event! Bob Pyle and Johnny Poole were hot with Bob taking first place and Johnny taking second. Chuck Weems took third place beating me out by I believe one point but I had a good throw. I had some 'woulda-shoulda-coulda' moments but overall I was quite satisfied with my progress in the Mountain Man throws.

Ron 'Cross sticks' Thomas won his division coming first in the overall, first in knife and second in hawk so he did very well against some pretty stiff competition. That moves him up to the pro division from now on!!!

KNIFE THROWING ON DAVID LETTERMAN
The Rev. Dr. David Adamovich (AKA The Great Throwdini) is by far the best knife thrower performing today. He is currently wowing audiences in his New York Show appropriately called 'Maximum Risk' which takes place in NYC on Monday nights at the Soho Theater. In the show Mr. Adamovich and others tempt fate by either creating or attempting to break an existing WORLD RECORD! In the first show he threw 97 knives around his assistant, Ekaterina, in sixty seconds!

The success of "Maximum Risk' has recently led to a spot on The David Letterman Show. This is one tough cookie to get into! The show aired on Wednesday (6/29/05) and it was great to see a friend and fellow knife thrower on national tv! I only had a few hours notice otherwise I would have told you all to watch! :-)

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with all of you. If this guy is good enough to WOW an audience on national tv by throwing 36 knives in about 30 seconds around a 'beautiful damsel in distress', then I am willing to give him a listen about his tips and techniques on how to throw knives, hawks and axes! CUTTING STUNTS
by Ed Sackett

These are trick throws in which the knife cuts (or appears to cut) one or more items before sticking in the target. Strips of paper, ribbons, flower stems, straws etc. are commonly used.

Professionals employ assistants to hold things in front of the target for cutting. Amateurs use inanimate objects ONLY!

Plant a pair of light poles in the ground and stretch your string or paper between them, or nail a couple of lengths of light board to the sides of your target to serve as arms for holding things.

DO NOT persuade ANYONE to stand in as a holder in cutting stunts.

The object to be cut must be positioned at the correct distance from the target. This means that it must intersect the path of the knife at a point where the knife is traveling vertically and point up. The aim is to hit the object with the blade as its coming forward. This will insure that the cutting is performed with maximum power, using both the spin and forward motion of the knife.

Start by positioning the item to be cut one-quarter turn in front of the target -- about two - three feet. This distance of course will vary depending on who is throwing. (Some people throw one spin from ten feet, others throw one spin from 14 feet. Just adjust the distance until you know the blade of your knife is vertical (point up) when it is passing the item you want to cut. (Throwing smaller knives, like the 4-8 inch 'Ebay-jobbers' will make the distance even closer to the target.

With practice, you can learn to cut two objects in a turn-and-a-half throw.

Once safety is assured, you can practice cutting stunts using almost any object your ingenuity suggests, but start with strips of paper about two inches wide; a roll of adding machine tape is perfect. An ordinary throw will rip the paper every time, but because throwing knives are not sharp-edged this "cut" will be ragged.

Some professionals often use a little sophistication here and this is why. Try holding a strip of paper (about 6-8 inches long) up in the air with one hand and then use your other hand to try and cut it with your throwing knife. The paper just bends. You would need a razor sharp edge, one stiff piece of paper and a perfect throw to even get close to cutting all the way through the strip. There just isn't enough 'backbone' in the paper to keep it stiff enough to cut.

So instead of a single strip of paper, they use two strips folded and pasted to form a pair of flat tubes. One tube is inserted about two inches into the other and the combined strip held in front of the target. The knife knocks the two strips apart even if only the handle strikes them, giving the effect of a scissors-sharp cut. It usually gets a nice round of applause.

Objects hung vertically in front of the target can also be cut, using a sidearm throw. This can be combined with a moving target stunt, say by suspending a tennis ball from a paper strip or a string, setting the resulting pendulum swinging before the throw, and attempting to cut the paper as it swings by the face of the target.

Balloons make a showy variation on cutting stunts. One or more balloons can be tethered to the ground in front of the target, with a final balloon taped to the target itself. A single powerful, precise throw can burst them all.
