1. What's New

Hello Throwers!

You may have noticed that for quite some time we have not had many throwing knives for sale. I have been in what seems like a never ending search for quality throwers that are available in a 'steady supply'. Its surprising how tough it is to get someone to hang out in their basement workshop and grind knives for 6 solid months :-)

Anyway, all of the throwers we've sold over the years have been quality stuff and its going to stay that way. Now its time for some commercially made knives! (A major benefit of this is... a steady supply!) No more waiting on backordered knives!

We now have Cold Steel's 14 inch Pro Flight Throwing Knife available! Its a great knife for throwing by the blade or handle, its stronger, heavier, and longer than other cheaper "floaters" on the market, it has a durable powder coat finish, and it also has an easy grip handle that helps with a consistent grip and release!

For a limited time if you buy 4 knives, you'll get the 5th knife ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! For more details about the Pro Flight Throwing Knife just go to the following page:

READERS TIP

CHEAP THROWER
One day I was trying to think of something I could use that would be cheap and not hard to modify to make a great throwing spike. And then it hit me! TENT STAKES!

You can get 4 of them for about $3 and you don't really have to modify them to throw them. Just take the plastic piece off. The tip is sharp enough and the end is smooth enough to throw. A softer target, like cardboard or foam, is best. This site is the best site! YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Well thats all for now. Hope everyone has a great time until we talk again! Stay safe and always remember... Beware of flying metal!!! :-)

TIPS ON UNDERHAND THROWING TECHNIQUES
By Burl Carl

First of all throwing underhand accurately is much more difficult than throwing overhand, especially the farther the distances you throw. I throw both overhand and underhand so trust me on this, I speak from experience!

Use a longer, heavier blade. It is much easier to control the rotation if you do. Also, the extra weight helps maintain the knife's momentum for sticking it into the target. I personally like to use a 14 or 15 inch bowie as it is much easier to control the rotation. I recently got to play around with an 18+ inch 'Gladius' blade and I found it a REAL easy thrower for underhand work.

I used to play a lot of slow pitch softball in my younger days and it carried over into knife throwing. The 'softball pitch' is the main way I throw the knife underhanded but I am able to do a cross under (off to my left side pitch out), right side pitchout throws, and reverse underhand shots (hit a target with my back facing it while looking over my right shoulder).

My underhand blade throws are basically the same as when I hold the handle EXCEPT that I do hold the blade palm up. I hold the flat of the blade on my fingertips and place my thumb on the top side. I throw half spins between 8 to about 20 feet. I throw a 1 1/2 spin around 24 to 27 feet.

When I do the front underhand throw (single spin), I stand about 18 to 19 feet from the target. I don't do a palm up throw. Instead, I hold the handle vertical to the target with the sharp edge away from the target. I place my left foot about one step in front of me and start the knife rocking by swinging my arm back and forth a few times to get my rhythm going. When I start the actual windup I swing my arm back to about a 45 degree angle. At the same moment I'm swinging my arm forward I take an additional step forward with my left foot.

The next part (the release and follow through) is really an instinct or Zen thing and is hard to explain. I start the release when my left foot is firmly planted about 2 steps in front of me AND the knife is somewhere between vertical (to the ground) and out to 45 degrees in front of me.

The speed of the arm swing should flow smooth and even. Don't rush or snap it or you will probably over rotate it quite a bit.

By the way, over rotation with an underhand throw results in the tip pointing up when it hits the target and under rotation the tip is pointed down.

The real trick to controlling the under/over rotation is how much (or how little) wrist snap you add at the moment of release. Like I said, it's a zen thing. Takes lots of practice but when it clicks and comes together you'll know what I mean. You'll know it's going to stick as it leaves your hand. Won't be any doubt!
