GUEST COLUMN THROWING WITH MOVEMENT By Ed Sackett **These variations on throwing with movement are a lot of fun, but they call for caution. Running, jumping, shoulder rolling, and vaulting while carrying knives is just as risky as it sounds. Scabbards or a multi-knife carrying case are commonsense pieces of safety equipment for practicing any type of throwing with movement, especially the more athletic stunts. Keeping the range clear of onlookers is equally important.** In its simplest and probably most difficult form, throwing with movement involves walking straight toward or backing away from the target while throwing a series of knives. This means that the distance to the target is constantly changing, so that every throw requires the use of judgment and different methods of control. Also, your throwing stance will differ slightly (or even a lot) from the stance you take up when throwing from a stationary mark. To increase the difficulty, speed up the pace of walking and throwing. Still not difficult enough? Try placing several paper markers on the ground in front of your target, and hop from one to another, one throw to one hop. A simple variation on throwing with movement is to lay several knives on the ground in the area in front of the target and then step quickly from one to another, picking them up and throwing from that spot. This simulates a plausible combat scenario; try first for smoothness and accuracy, then for speed. If you have a throwing partner, you can increase the challenge by placing each other's knives here and there about the throwing range. "Okay, turn your back while I drop your knives. Where? Oh, somewhere." For drama, exercise, and a good way to sharpen your skills, practice throwing while jumping or vaulting over an obstacle such as a sawhorse. You may need to shorten your throwing distance a bit for such stunts. And BE CAREFUL!!! An entire obstacle course can be laid out, using multiple targets. For the sake of economy and flexibility, make up a number of laminated cardboard targets, unless you have plenty of lumber and the time to carpenter it. Frank Dean, a famous professional knife thrower, described knife throwing from horseback at a gallop as a real challenge. If your stable includes a well-broken horse that doesn't mind steel flashing by his head, you may want to try this too. Failing that, try throwing from a moving bicycle. You may want to establish a throwing mark while sitting on your bike, and then practice throwing as you ride past the mark, rather than relying on Eyeball Model 1 just at first. If you young fellers want to try throwing from blades or a skateboard, fine; I'll stand well back and watch.
