1. What's New

Hi Throwers!

Its almost April and its finally warming up in Wisconsin! WhewHoo! I was outside yesterday cleaning up my target range again. Leaves, branches, dirt, rocks, and lets see, what else was under there... Oh Yeah, JUNK! I don't know where it all comes from but its there every Spring? Those dang chipmunks! :-)

So I spent a while cleaning up garbage, raking wood chips and re-painting my distance markers and target faces. I'm now ready for the season to start! Oh Yeah! :-)

It looked so nice when I finished that I just had to throw a few... hundred knives. I was pretty rusty and bounced quite a few knives. I'm pretty good at the 1 spin so within a couple minutes I could feel my 'groove' coming back and I was keeping most of my knives in the 8 inch ring.

But throwing 2 spins was another story. And it wasn't a very good one :-) A couple "THUNKS!" here and there and alot of "CLANGING!" could be heard for blocks around our house. You might think I'm exaggerating but people I had never even seen before were stopping over to find out what the ruckus was.

It seems every Spring I need a refresher course for all distances past the 1 spin mark. So I do what many other logical knife throwers have done, I copy someone who is better than me! I'm kidding :-) What I really mean is, I ask more experienced throwers for help. And if they won't return my calls (Curse You Joe Darrah :-))))) I resort to the next best thing. I watch my Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing instructional video.

If you want to stick more knives from all distances I highly recommend this dvd. Its the most thorough throwing video I have ever seen. For more info check out this page: http://www.throwzini.com/tgt_video.html

Of course its raining today so there's no throwing going on, so I think I'll watch the video again (that'll be the 53rd time I'll have seen it!) and fine tune my lack of style once again! If throwing was easy, it wouldn't feel so good when you stick 5 bulls from 12 feet! Everything worthwhile takes practice, so keep at it!

AN EASY WAY TO MAKE A TARGET STAND
If you ever find any "half" rounds laying around, here is a great way to include them in your target set up:

Alrighty throwers, thats it for this time around! Have fun, be safe, teach someone new to throw, and keep your blades out of the dirt!

2. GUEST COLUMN

A GAME KNOWN AS "CALL IT"
by Shane Blackwell

This game is named "Call It" and it really helps to improve the ability to hit a target "On Call".

We have five rounds set up at different heights. They are 16 inches in diameter (give or take a bit) and are painted with the 2 1/2 inch bull, an 8 inch second ring, and the third ring which is 16 inches. We score as 3,2,1 respectively.

The thrower lines up and his opponent calls the round that he has to throw for. If he sticks the target his opponent calls a different round, but if he misses, his opponent can keep calling the same round until he hits it or runs out of throws (5 knives).

Scores are added up and high score wins after three or more turns each. If more than two are throwing, the next in line calls the rounds to hit for the previous thrower.

This game helps the thrower to work on their weaknesses since the opponent will always make them shoot for the targets that they have trouble hitting. Close games are a riot because you know which target they are going to make you hit... the one you always miss!

When the game starts getting too easy for you, try using smaller targets or start throwing from different positions like sitting in a chair, kneeling down or throwing with the opposite hand.

Thanks for the great newsletter. My little group of throwers is having a great time and my daughter is beating everyone but me... pardon me I have to go practice :-)
