Contact Info/Reprint Guidelines ================================================= 1. What's New Hello Throwers! The more people I can introduce to this sport, the better. I know they won't all get as hooked as some of us are but if you happen to see a spark light in someones eyes as they stick their first knife... you know you've just given them a gift that could last a lifetime. So anyway, I've taught hundreds of people to throw, in person, and found that its mostly about the instructions you give them. You just have to explain 'the basics' of throwing, in a way that the person can understand and remember. Telling a person not to snap their wrist may not get them to stop. It feels so natural when you're just starting out, but if you tell the person to concentrate more on following through, that may be easier for them to accomplish. On to the point... World Champion Knife Thrower, David R. Adamovich created an instructional video about our sport that covers EVERYTHING you can imagine! There are slow motion sequences of competition knife, axe and hawk throwing plus practice drills and tons of other cool things! As a knife thrower, Mr. Adamovich teaches you how to throw knives like a professional, whether your interest is recreational throwing or competition throwing. So my advice to you is that if you want to learn how to throw or how to become a better thrower, you should check out David's video. From beginners to experts, there's something in it for everyone. To find out what other types of things you'll learn from this video just follow this link: http://www.throwzini.com/tgt_video.html VIDEO LINK FINDING TARGETS AFTER CHRISTMAS Yes I know this tip is a little late, but its a good one so just consider this 'Planning Ahead For Next Year'. Some Christmas trees come with a "slice" for a base (at least here in the UK they do). The local Council organises 'tree recycling collection points' after Christmas - and they are good enough to list the collection points in the local paper, which makes life easier. So after driving around wielding a big mallet for a day or two... behold, 14 targets. There's a hole drilled in one side but they still work great and they're free! Tip Contributed by Jim Cronin Coventry, UK To see a pic of Jim's target just visit the LOCAL THROWERS page on our site and go to the link titled UNITED KINGDOM: http://www.throwzini.com/ AOL USERS LINK That's all for this issue. GUEST COLUMN THE IKTHOFA... BRINGING LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE TOGETHER TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE - By Scott Gracia Professional associations have been established in the United States for more than two hundred years. The first association was established in 1743 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was organized by Benjamin Franklin and now is known as the American Philosophical Association. Today 7 out of 10 adult Americans belong to at least one association. There are now more than 123,000 national, international, regional, state and local associations. These associations bring like-minded people together to learn to improve their craft, teach their craft to others, as well as provide a forum to bring them together for the exchanges of ideas to continuously improve their respective crafts. A while back I mentioned a new organization called the IKTHOFA (International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame Association). Since this club has started they've accomplished many things for our sport. Things like boosting attendance at many events throughout the US. And they've introduced tons of people to our sport and encouraged them to spread the word and to have fun. They have also established an International Ranking System for knife throwers. This means peoples skills can now be compared/ranked to others around the globe to see just how good they really are. Right now the highest ranked thrower in the World has a score of 218 points out of a possible 300! Think you can beat it? Well sign up for the club and give it a try! Here's a little motivator for you: If you manage a 225, which has not yet been reached, you get a free airline ticket, free hotel, and banquet fees to the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Austin, Texas. There you will have the opportunity to compete in the Central United States Knife Throwing Championships and also compete for a $1000 prize in the 2nd Annual IKTHOF Gold Cup! I joined the IKTHOFA (member #14) and tested in 2003 when I attended the Central US Knife Throwing Championships. If I remember correctly, it was raining, the sun was in my eyes, my knives were stolen and replaced with slightly altered replicas, and I think my trick knee was acting up that day :-) But I managed to score a 185 and was pretty happy with myself. Right now I am ranked 9th in the world! Whew-Hoo! :-) But I plan to retest. I think I have a 200 game hidden deep inside me. Really deep :-) I'm sure many of you metal flingers out there can throw better than a 185. But you have to be a member of the IKTHOFA in order for your score to be published on their site and written in the record books that are kept for future generations to see! These are permanent records (unless you retest and get a higher score), and in 25 years when people are still signing up to be members and getting ranked, your score will still be up there for all to see. Will you be the first person EVER to throw a 225? There's only one way to find out, sign up for the IKTHOFA and Get 'R Done!!!
