1. What's New

Hello!

Well we had quite a weather change here in Wisconsin last week. The temps went from being in the 20's up to the low 50's for a few days. I can finally see my targets, Whewhoo!

Its back down into the 20's now but that little burst of warm air reminded me that Spring is almost on its way. It'll be a while yet but I can already see my new targets set up and looking all spiffy! Ya just gotta love that new paint and fresh bullseye look :-)

Since its still too cold for some of us to be outside holding steel in our hands, maybe now is a good time to do some upkeep on our ranges and equipment. Look for fresh logs or future targets, rake/shovel/clean up the target area, re-mark distances etc.

Now is also a great time to clean up your knives and hawks too. Wash them or scrub them with an SOS pad to get any dirt or mud off, check the edges and file off any major dents or burrs, and give them a light coat of oil to prevent rust. A little work now can save you a bleeding finger later!

WHAT IS CONSIDERED 'GOOD' THROWING?
By David Adamovich (aka The Great ThrowDini)

A while back I had a conversation with my good friend David Adamovich, aka "The Great ThrowDini". Among many other things happening in his life, Dr. Adamovich performs one of the best knife throwing routines in the US today, MAXIMUM RISK.

He is also the man behind the "Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing" instructional DVD which, in my opinion, is the best instructional video available today.

Anyway, every week I receive quite a few e-mails from people that would love to compete in a tournament, but they don't think they are good enough to take part.

(In my opinion, no matter what your scores are, I think you should attend a competition. Meeting and throwing with the other participants will do more for your game than 6 months of practice in your backyard!)

I asked David's opinion and here's what he wrote back.

Dear Scott, your question can be answered as follows.

TARGETS
Set up anywhere from 1 to 4 target rounds. Each target round should be a minimum of 16 inches across. Draw a 16 inch circle, inside of that draw an 8 inch circle, and inside of that - dead center - a 2 1/2 inch circle.

For simplicity sake, mount all targets so the bullseyes are between your waist and your shoulder height.

SCORING
From the outside in, score 1 point for any stick within the 16 inch ring, 2 points within the 8 inch ring and 3 points for a bullseye.

DISTANCES
Set two distance marks: 12 feet and 18 feet.

---------------------------------------------------------
These are 'minimum' distances. That means the closest you can be to your target is 12 feet if you are throwing 1 full spin. If you throw 1 spin from 14 or 17 feet that is fine. You just can't be any closer to your target than 12 feet.

The same rules apply for your 2 spin distance. You can be 35 feet away from your target if you need to be, but no closer than 18 feet.

---------------------------------------------------------

From the 12 foot line (or beyond) throw a single spin from the handle.

From the 18 foot line (or beyond) throw a double spin from the handle.

Throw a total of 40 knives from each distance and write down your score.

Having done that compare your score with top competitors. The top three in the winners circle will usually score around 80 points from 12 feet and 60 points from 18 feet.

(I just checked the scores for the top 3 finishers at the 2004 Pacific Knife Throwers World Championships and they were:

12 Foot Single Spin: 88, 86, and 84 points, and for the 18 Foot Double Spin: 62, 61 and 60 points.
