The last thing I remember I was throwing knives while standing in mud (Spring time) and now my targets are frozen again? Where the heck did the Summer go? I remember being a kid and saying to my Dad, "This school year is NEVER going to end! Every day just drags and drags... blah blah blah" And his answer was, "Enjoy it. When you get older the days, months and years will fly by!" And you know what, he wasn't lying! The days DO fly by! So anyway, have fun this new year! 2005 will be here and gone in no time (Trust Me :-) Set some "goals" for 2005. Goals like, throwing more often, trying new knife designs or techniques, teaching someone else to throw, entering a tournament, throwing with family members... Mainly, just have more fun next year in 2005, than you did this year in 2004! :-) A pretty simple goal if you ask me!!! Be sure to check out our PAST NEWSLETTERS and ARTICLES section on the site. Those pages are stocked full of great things, all related to throwing! Just go to this page and look for the links: http://www.throwzini.com AOL USERS LINK ------------------------------------------------------ TIP FROM HAWAIIAN THROWER CARY OSHIRO Here is an idea that may interest anyone who loves to throw knives but has problems with the unmistakable "CLANG" noise associated with our chosen leisure activity: We started practicing with a hay bale target. It wasn't pretty but it wasn't loud either. In fact the hay bale was a bargain at about $16.00. It still works and it's over 6 months old. ------------------------------------------------------ Well, since my targets are buried and surrounded by "slop" right now, I guess its time to go down to the basement and find some smaller pointy things to hurl around! Have a safe, happy and healthy 2005, and we'll talk again next year! :-) Scott Gracia http://www.throwzini.com AOL USERS LINK LOCAL THROWERS If you are looking for local people to learn from or just hang out with and throw sharp pieces of metal, then this is the place for you. And more people are signing up all the time! Soon you'll be able to throw with someone where ever you go! GUEST COLUMN VARIATIONS IN THROWING POSTURE by Ed Sackett For some reason, maybe a faulty upbringing, I've always associated knife and tomahawk throwing with carnival sideshows. When I was a boy just starting out, my ambition was to master as many throwing tricks and stunts as I could, in the belief that that was the way the REAL knife throwers did it. Well, it's no use fighting destiny; I still feel that way. Perhaps I get a little bored with plain-vanilla throwing-to-the mark; perhaps I just have a showoff streak. But I enjoy practicing variations and stunts involving thrown weapons, even though I'm pretty sure (make that VERY sure) I'll never appear as a midway headliner. After you've gained some skill at sticking your knife from, say, a half-turn, a full turn, and a turn-and-a-half, you too will probably want to experiment a bit. No, you'll want to experiment a whole lot, and good for you. Just remember to warm up first with conventional throws, then practice your stunts and variations one at a time, and stay with each one until you can do it at least once in three or four tries. Then go on to some other stunt. Too much doggedness leads to frustration and disgust with the whole hobby. Remember that this is supposed to be fun, and you'll have fun. VARIATIONS IN THROWING POSTURE The basic throwing posture is standing, facing the target with either your right or left foot forward, but after you've mastered the essentials of this, try learning to throw from different positions: *Sitting (in a chair, then on a low stool, then, hardest of all, on the ground). *Kneeling, first on your left knee, then on your right. *Lying on your back (position your throwing shoulder on the throwing mark or a little ahead of it). *Crouching (good exercise and very dramatic-looking). *Around or over an obstacle (pile two or three cardboard boxes on top of each other). *Standing on a chair or stepladder *From under an obstacle (much harder; try laying a light stick across two piles of cardboard boxes and using underhand or sidearm throws). And so on. You'll quickly add to this list. Article Contributed By: Ed Sackett Detroit, Michigan ============================================= 3. This Week's Featured Products!
