1. What's New

Hello Throwers!

I'd like to thank everyone for the overwhelming response we've had with our latest video, The Fundamentals of Knife, Hawk and Axe Throwing made by David Admovich. It's fantastic to see so many people committed to improving their throwing ability. Its also gratifying to already be hearing about success stories that the dvd has helped to create!

I talk to "Throw" (aka David Adamovich) quite a bit. One of our latest conversations was about training/practicing for upcoming events. And here is one of Davids tips for becoming a better thrower:
---------------------------------------------------------
TRAINING TIP
"Laying off of throwing for a week (after a hard training week), brings you back even better than before you stopped. This is explained as follows"...

"When you train and overtrain there is a necessary recovery period. If you overtrain you do not adequately recover since you are working in the necessary "recovery period". Thus, laying off allows all of your energy stores to recuperate and you come back even better than when you layed off."
---------------------------------------------------------

2. GUEST COLUMN

ANOTHER GREAT DRILL FOR IMPROVING ACCURACY
Part I of II
by Roy Hutchinson

I recently took part in a small "throwing get-together". I had a great time of course but also noticed something that I wanted to share.

One of the participants that showed up only brought 1 knife to throw. No big deal really but there were 5 targets set up, and you were to throw 1 knife at each target before your turn was up. So for each round, this person had to throw the 1 knife, and retrieve it. Then aim at the 2nd target, throw and retrieve and so on, until all 5 targets had been thrown at.

I am certain, that a thrower who throws one knife only, and then has to retrieve it to throw again, is losing out on accuracy.

For many years I was a dart player. These years were before darts became a world-wide sport as they are at this present time. Throwing a set of darts is basically the same as throwing a set of knives. The concentration, the composure, the stance, and the throw all need to be coordinated together.

After the first dart is thrown, the "eye" is in, and the other darts follow the pattern to a certain extent. Yes, occasionally, a dart would hit the wire separating the numbers and bounce out, or it may also catch a dart already in the board, and bounce out.

These bounce outs are unavoidable, and many wondrous inventions and ideas were worked on to try and prevent these bounce outs from happening. That included me who tried to market a dart that would not bounce off the wire. Remember the match can be lost, and also a fortune in prize money, because of a dart that does not stick. Championships have been lost many times for such reasons.

Back to the knives...

For a while now, I have been throwing 5 of my knives at a 2 inch bull, to try and get a little accurate. I have never bothered before with accuracy, as I have a great time just "sticking" knives, but I decided to give it a go. I am by no means an accurate thrower, nonetheless I kept on hitting knives, or a knife already stuck in the target. This got pretty boring, cause it damaged the knives, and generally upset the throw.

Remembering my dart days, I knew that it was a no-good excersise, throwing only one knife, so I tried to dream up a way whereby 5 knives could be thrown without upsetting the composure, and the first knife "eye" in throw.

Throwing at 5 different targets was not a good idea, cause it meant moving too far after each throw, and this was almost as bad as throwing one knife and retrieving.

Back to the darts.

I remembered the times when at least one dart was in the treble 20, and there was room for another to the right or left. At times like this, we would often move our stance slightly left or right in order to try to fit another dart alongside the dart already in the treble. I remember that this slight move had no effect on the composure, or the "eye" in status, and you will find this move carried out at dart tournaments to this day.

The score of a dart player would be vastly affected if he/she had to throw only one dart and retrieve it 3 times.

Part II continued in our next issue!
