Opening Letter: Continuous Improvement 2. Finding Your Mark-by Matthew Rapaport 3. A Great Knife Throwing Video 4. Almost Time to Move Indoors 5. Contact Info/Reprint Guidelines ======================================= 1. CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT We are always trying to add new content to our site. New products, pictures, articles, or any other useful information on throwing. Now that our site has grown, it's getting a little harder to find the "new stuff" when you visit. So we thought it was time to start an e-zine. This way we can keep you updated on any new additions to the site or any upcoming events in the knife throwing world. The biggest benefits of receiving this free e-zine-- in addition to alerting you to what's new on our site-- you'll get tips, ideas, advice and interviews with some of the biggest names in the sport of knife throwing! This issue we'll hear from Matthew Rapaport, webmaster of The Thrower Page. ======================================= WHAT'S NEW Besides starting the e-zine we also added a WHAT'S NEW link to the main page. Any new additions to the site will be listed here. Like the new HUMOR link, or the new DRAGON KNIVES from John Goss. We also list any new pages, pictures or useful websites we come across. http://www.throwzini.com NEW WEB SITE ADDRESS Originally our web site was being hosted on my personal web space, it was inexpensive but slow. So I recently registered a domain: http://www.throwzini.com Be sure to update your bookmarks. You should notice a faster loading time on all the pages, which saves us all lots of time! ========================================== 2. KNIFE THROWING 101: We get dozens of e-mails every week from the visitors of our site. Lots of them have great questions about the sport of knife throwing. So we're going to answer some of them in each of our issues. About 1/3rd of the questions we receive ask about figuring out where to stand when you begin throwing. Since this is such a popular question, we thought it deserved the first issue... Arthur Anderson writes: "I'm an extremely newbie thrower who is having a bit o' trouble locating the correct distance from me to the target. Is there a formula for this out there, or a better way to get it right than wandering about the yard hurling knives... (the neighbors are starting to worry I think...). Also, how does one determine how many rotations the throw actually is? Thanks for your time" Arthur Anderson aethelf1@maine.rr.com That's a terrific question and one that every new knife thrower wants to know the answer to. Our Guest Columnist, Matthew Rapaport devotes his article to this question. Enjoy! ==================================== GUEST COLUMN: FINDING YOUR MARK by Matthew Rapaport The trouble with all of this distance advice is that it is too confining. Rotation distance varies with the knife, the grip, the way you throw, the length of your arm, etc. If you are really a beginner you will find that after 10 throws or so your arm starts to tire (you have to throw with at least some force after all) and that will change your distance, etc. There is no magic to this. A half turn is usually easiest and for most people and most knives, this will take place at somewhere between 6 and 8 feet from the target, but even this can vary. Start close, say 6 feet. Throw fairly hard. The knife should hit point UP (if it doesn't stick that is). That means you are too close. Step back a foot and do it again. Try to duplicate the grip and throw exactly the same every time. Keep moving back until the knife sticks, or hits point DOWN -- which means you're too far away... After a while you will find your natural distance for *that* knife and throw, etc. Keep practicing... You will find your distance may change from day to day... Don't worry about it, just go with it until you begin to become consistent. That can take hundreds of throws over many months... Then again, you could be a natural and connect with the process in a couple of hours... Matthew Rapaport, webmaster: http://www.crl.com/~mjr/thrower mjr@crl.com ============================================= RECREATIONAL KNIFE THROWING VIDEO If you want to learn the insider SECRETS, TIPS and TRICKS that the masters use to hit their mark every time, then John Bailey's Recreational Knife Throwing Video is for you. If you live anywhere near the snow belt... take advantage of the little amount of time we have left to throw outside. For me its inside to a 9' X 12' room. No more 2 or 3 turn throws... no more axes or hatchets... and rarely a knife bigger than 9", (my neighbors can only handle so much noise!) Soon it will be only 1/2 and 1 turn throws. So get out there and enjoy it while you can. In the next issue we will have an article on LIGHT THROWERS from Ed Sackett, you'll get lots of ideas for indoor throwers and indoor targets. Oh yeah... I hope you all have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! ============================================= If you have any questions about throwing that you would like answered in one of our upcoming issues, simply send an email to: sgracia@wi.rr.com with QUESTION FOR NEWSLETTER in the Subject Line, and your name and question in the body. ============================================= (Copyright 1999, Scott Gracia, The Great Throwzini.)
