The Chucker 2004
RESULTS
(Hold your mouse over the pictures and information about the pic will pop up)
When I first started to have the Chucker Events, four years ago, it was just
for my friends and locals to see if I could get any of them interested in
knife throwing. Well, it seems I have succeeded beyond my wildest
expectations. We inducted four new Chuckers at the Chucker 2004!
David Moffitt and his son Hunter have been diligently practicing to win, David
even had his Bob Karp knives powder coated blue to intimidate and dazzle
his opponents.
We also welcomed Ron Horvitz to the Chuckers. (His son Ben is on his right). After last year's tournament
Ron bought a set of throwing knives and set up a range in his back yard. He's
got the knife throwing "bug."
And finally, Dallas Kitchen was inducted as a San Diego Chucker. He's only
been throwing for 3 months and he's already nipping on the heels of the
other Chuckers. Watch out for Dallas! Many of the new throwers have come to
the Chuckers from Scott Gracia's web site. If you haven't registered on his
Local Throwers Page you should. Through The Great Throwzini web site I have
met numerous throwers who really are competitors and most importantly, they
became my friends.
Here's just a sampling of what the San Diego Chuckers have accomplished.
Micah Posada has won or placed in the top three in numerous tournaments,
Daniel Clark has garnered numerous trophies and awards, including 1st place
in Chucker 2003 and Todd Abrams always has surprises up his sleeve, placing
first in many specialty events.
This year's Chucker 2004 had 14 REAL competitors. The Chucker 2004 consisted
of two knife and two "ninja" weapon events. Knives are thrown at 8' and 12'
and the "ninja" weapons are thrown at 8' and 12'. Next year we will drop the
"ninja" weapons and throw knives and tomahawks from the more standard
distances in order to attract even more competitors.
Micah Posada was a man possessed. He threw 199 out of a possible 240. That
means 83% of the time he hit the bullseye! Sixty percent is very good,
83% is phenomenal!
Daniel Clark, last year's champion threw a very respectable 182 and Todd
Abrams was third with a 165. Dallas Kitchen was close behind with a 161. All
the other scores are listed below.
This year we also threw the 7' Samburu Spear by Cold Steel. Since many of
us will be going to the Cold Steel Challenge in late September I figured
the competitors could use the practice with this monster spear. Micah was
hot in this event also, although he was not hot enough. A new thrower,
Hunter Moffitt, snatched victory in the spear throw. Proving that youth and
strength can prevail - sometimes. Congratulations, Hunter!
As an added treat this year we also had a blowgun contest won by Todd Abrams.
Since blowguns
are illegal in California, (I'm sure you have read about our daily drive-by
blowgunnings), we felt compelled to have the contest. Everyone had a great
time, that must be why they are illegal - they're too much fun. Our target
was "Woody" the woodchuck.
Woody is actually a full size archery target. Two "blowers" sat or stood
at 18' and let loose with 30 darts. Dallas Kitchen and Todd Abrams put on
a wonderful demonstration of hand/eye coordination. When the dust had
cleared Todd Abrams won by three points, 41-38. Todd is also the same guy
who borrowed a quick draw gun and holster from guys who practice all year
for the Wild West Arts Show in Las Vegas and beat them to win the Quick
Draw contest in Las Vegas this year.
It was a great afternoon, everyone won at least two raffle prizes, the chili
dogs were great thanks to the culinary skills of James "Mad Dog" McKinley,
and we were blessed with another visit from the tournament's namesake, Chuck
Forgarty. Chuck came to Chucker this year even though he is in the middle of
moving to his new house in Syracuse, IN. That's dedication to knife throwing!
THE SCORES:
Micah Posada - 199
Daniel Clark - 182
Todd Abrams - 164
Dallas Kitchen - 161
David Moffitt - 146
Ron Horvitz - 133
Hunter Moffitt - 107
Chuck Fogarty - 107
Andrew Woodfine - 102
Ben Horvitz - 94
Fred Caminite - 77
Andre Caminite - 64
James "Mad Dog" McKinley - 46
Steve Norquist - 35 (Blowgun only)
Notice all the Father/Son teams. It was great to see the fathers interacting
and bonding with their sons.
If the rumors are true that the WWAC event in Las Vegas is moving to
Oklahoma, we will be changing the format of the Chucker to be more
competitive in the future and make the Chucker 2005 a world-class event.
We will throw from 8' to 21' and have money purses for the winners of
the events. I'm currently negotiating with a gun range to have the
Chucker 2005 on their property in order to handle larger crowds.
