1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello Throwers!

Now that Winter is gone, its great not having to deal with snow on your target range. But now we get to deal with rain and mud :-)

This isn't so bad though because you can just lay some plywood down over the mud and walk on the wood. If you have enough wood to lay all around your targets, it also helps to keep your knives clean (out of the mud) when the "occasional" bounce happens.

Keeping your knives dry, on the other hand, can be a bit more difficult. Wet knives seem to be a little more slippery than the dry ones and this can change the way they "fly" from your hand upon release. The simplest tip I can give is to keep a dry towel, or three, handy to dry your knives off after each round.

I don't throw too often in the rain these days. I'm either getting smarter or wimpier in my old age?

2. GUEST COLUMN:

MY INTRODUCTION TO THROWING
by Scott R. Bryan

Hello fellow tossers of blades and such... my name is Scott R. Bryan and I am here in London, England (but originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin). My first experience with throwing started a few years ago. My good friend Scott Gracia (and host of this very site) had invited me to his house when he was living in Racine, Wisconsin.

When I arrived I saw him throwing knives at 3 huge log rounds that were stacked up against a tree in his front yard and immediately thought to myself, "I gotta give this a whirl!" So, when he had invited me to give it a try I was more than ready to chuck some steel. It took a few tries to get my distance figured... so, of course, the first several attempts were the almighty "clang-bang search and rescue" in the hidden grass.

But, the 1st time I stuck one solid and heard that *THUNK* sound, I WAS HOOKED!

He had a variety of blades and axes and such and we would spend hours trying them all. It took many attempts until I felt comfortable with a heavier and bigger set of knives, but thats what I knew I liked (they just felt good and smooth).

A few hours later Scott had some markers and spray paint and he was deciding on what kind of targets to draw. I had to help! As a novice, the targets turned out more to be cartoons than anything else but its all about fun anyway! On one log round I drew a frog with a little fly by its head, on another an alien spaceship, and on the 3rd target I drew an elephant wearing a hat with a flower pot sticking out from the top.

We decided to assign points for various areas of the targets. The frog was 5points, parts of the spaceship and elephant were 5/10/&15points, and the tiny little fly, the flower pot on the hat and the alien inside the ship were 100 points. (Those last 3 targets were no bigger than a dime.)

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! First one up to 500 points wins! Game after game after game until it was too dark to see.

This is how I started and have enjoyed throwing ever since. We have since engaged in a variety of fun games like "horse" (basketball) but instead we play 'knives' with blades or 'axe' with you guessed it, "axes".

There is always the opportunity to let your mind go wild with creativity and come up with all sorts of ways to have fun tossing blades and pointy things. Have fun everyone and stick 'em... stick 'em good :]

4. SMALLER LOGS = SMALLER GROUPS = HIGHER SCORES
by Burl Carl

Next time you're searching for new tree rounds for your target range, try finding smaller diameter rounds, like ten to eleven inches in diameter. They are easier to mount because they are lighter in weight, AND they will help you focus better on hitting an eight inch target.

I found that when I practice with regulation size targets - about twenty inches, I tend to get sloppy (too many 1 point hits on the outer ring).

I use a cardboard template that is 8 inches in diameter. There is a 2 1/2" hole in the middle of the template. I hold the cardboard template in place on the target and spray paint the center bullseye and spray just around the edge of the template.

This will give you an eight inch (non sprayed) area and a regulation size bullseye (2 1/2 inches). You can also, as an alternative to holding the template in place, pin it to the tree round when spray painting.

Here is the secret to improving your bullseye hit ratio from whatever distance you throw from. Concentrate on throwing at a spot on the target about the size of a silver dollar.

If you are using correct form when throwing - ie. windup, release, follow through etc. - watch how your throws are grouping (they are grouping right? Well they should be if your form is correct).

Change your point of aim (pick a new spot) to compensate for where your grouping is hitting the target. It's kind of like adjusting the sights on a rifle (elevation and windage).

Some days I can aim right at the bullseye and hit it dead on from 8 to 15 feet away. Other days I might have to move my point of aim up or to the left or to the right, depending on where my groups are hitting.
