The weather is changing already. Its still great outside for throwing but pretty soon that old "Wisconsin Winter" is going to start kicking in! We'll be wearing 4 layers of clothes just to get 10 minutes of throwing in. And if your knives hit the ground... Fuh-git-abow-dit! They'll be too cold to hold in less than a minute. So anyways, I'm getting in as much practice as I can lately and thats making time just fly by. Like my friend Carl says... "Life is good!"... especially when you're throwing knives :) VACATION!!! My girlfriend Renae and I are leaving for a trip to Florida this weekend! We're going to visit some family, check out some sites, and of course, do a little knife throwing! We're going to stop at John Bailey's and throw. I can't wait! John is the maker of the video Recreational Knife Throwing: http://www.throwzini.com/tgt_video.html He is also putting the finishing touches on his latest instructional video... Recreational Knife Throwing II More details on this one coming soooon! Start sharpening your knives John, and we'll see you in a few days :) Until next time... GUEST COLUMN: TEMPERING STEEL -- Part 1 of 2 by Mike Spiker I would like to start out saying that this article is intended as a starting baseline, that should be modified as needed to fit each individuals preference in steel, equipment etc. There is simply no one heat-treat that will work for everybody because of all the variables involved, but hopefully this will at least get you in the ballpark. SAFETY During the process, the steel is going to be hot enough to burn you thru welding gloves if you try to handle it, so if the knife becomes dislodged from the pliers don't try to grab it! The "quenchant" is used motor oil, it is flammable, but I haven't had a problem unless the oil gets over-heated. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature, and keep a lid for the container nearby so that in case of a flare-up you can snuff the fire. The safety issues are mostly common-sense things like wear gloves and a face shield and don't splash the knife into the oil. REQUIRED MATERIALS PLIERS The longer the handles the better WELDING GLOVES Welding gloves protect the whole hand and forearm FACESHIELD A full shield is best THERMOMETER These can be picked-up at the auto parts store in the a/c section CONTAINER & LID Must be deep enough to completely submerge the knives QUENCHANT Used motor oil OVEN A toaster oven will work fine as will a kitchen oven HEAT SOURCE Torch, forge etc. (I will cover forges in another article.) SMALL MAGNET The hardware store variety will work fine FILE New or used Now with all that said, we will move on.. . to a 2 week commercial break from our sponsors :) Part 2 of 2 continued in our next issue. "DOWSING" FOR LOST KNIVES by John Craggs Okay, so you wrapped the hilt with coloured tape and you still can't find the knife that went into the thick undergrowth, or hit the ground just right and slid under the surface. If you've got a metal detector, no problem. If not, hang a powerful magnet on 3 feet or so of string on the end of a bendy stick (like one of those magnetic fishing games) and gently sweep the likely area (just above the ground) until you feel a tug. The stick helps to 'amplify' even a gentle pull. TYPE OF MAGNET The magnet from the magnetron of a dead microwave is ideal. I suggest you visit an appliance repair shop and ask for an old magnetron. Don't be tempted to dismantle an old microwave yourself - unless you truly know what you're doing - because there can be up to 5000 fat sparky volts stored in the capacitor! But a dead magnetron is easy to pull apart with pliers, revealing one or sometimes two very powerful round magnets. You'll be amazed how much metallic junk is buried in your garden. And be sure to keep it away from your computer discs. It may look silly, but it's a damned site better than losing a good knife, or perhaps finding a small 'spike' later with your bare feet ;-) Article Contributed By: John Craggs gyppo@cwcom.net ============================================ ADVERTISE WITH US Run an ad in this newsletter and expose your business to thousands of potential customers!
