1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello people!

I hope you're all enjoying the Summer weather. It has been pretty "tropical" here lately. The humidity makes it feel like you're breathing through a wet towel!

So, needless to say, I haven't gotten that much throwing in the past few days. But its getting a bit cooler so I'll be out there in no time!!!

I recently got a custom made thrower in the mail from a guy named Bruce Reisner. Its a small "Bowie" design that is great for indoor throwing.

I abused it for about 45 minutes smacking it sideways and all that other fun stuff and it is still nice and straight!

For more details and to see some pics of this "mini bowie" just go to the THROWERS link and then click on the CUSTOM DESIGNS link:

http://www.throwzini.com

Well I hope you all have a great few weeks and I'll talk to you soon!!!

Keep on chuckin' that steel!

LOW COST HOMEMADE THROWERS -- Part 2 of 2
by Sam Nolte

Continued From Issue #40

You now have a custom made throwing knife! However, it will probably not look very pretty, so if you are like me and want your knives to look good and throw good, try a little finishing on it.

The absolute easiest way to make a knife look better is to spray it with a finish. You can buy different types of finish at any Wal-Mart, Lowes Lumber, Home Depot, or just about any other hardware store. I like the Rust-Oleum hammered finish, and for those of you who like the flat black Teflon look, buy some grill spray paint.

Experiment with different sprays, or a combination of two or more. It's your knife! Make it like you want! If you don't like any of the finishes, and maybe want a gleaming silver knife to throw, then try some sanding, or wire brush wheels, or something similar. Use your imagination.

I bought some 5" adhesive sanding discs for a 6" electric buffer/sander (oops) but they still work pretty well for shining it up, and sharpening also.

I like my knives to be somewhat sharp, since, as I see it, why have a knife if its not sharp? I don't know, maybe I just like the adrenaline rush that comes from dodging sharp rebounding objects :)

If you want to have a really nice looking knife, up front it might cost you almost the same price as it would for you to buy one, but remember, it doesn't take very much of a can of finish to spray a knife, it doesn't take a whole lot of sandpaper to shine a knife up, and it doesn't take very much of a grinding wheel to make a knife.

You can make several knives for a fraction of the cost it took to buy the materials for the first one.

That's about all there is to it. The only drawback to making your own knives is it does take alot longer to make a knife than it does to buy one. But for me, the pride and satisfaction of looking over my knives and selling them, and knowing that they are good quality, is worth it.

4. The Chucker 2001
by Carl Geddes

The following are the results of the Chucker 2001 held July 14, 2001 at Carl Geddes' house in beautiful San Diego, CA.

The day was typical for San Diego. The golden sun was shining in a rich blue cloudless sky. At tournament time the temperature was hovering in the mid 70's. Yes, it was another day in paradise.

The nine competitors were all friends, which later in the day proved to be beneficial as the scores plummeted and the temperatures soared into the 80's. Competition became fierce.

The throwers ranged in age from 10 - 58 years old. All the throwers knew this was going to be a competitive event from the very first thrower. Harold, a mountain man, threw three bulls eyes in his first set of three throws from the r spin line. Those three bulls's set the stage for fierce competition throughout the event.

A "set" consisted of three knives thrown at three different pine targets placed at three different heights.

The r spin event had a total of 15 knives thrown for a total of five sets per distance, and then we moved on to the full spin event for a total of 15 more knives. After the knives were thrown, we took a short break.

Part two of the contest consisted of throwing a martial arts "thing" at 8' and 12'. Andre, the 10 year old, kicked everyone's butt at 8' with the "thing".

After Andre finished his turn the other competitors asked him for lessons. Andre renews your faith in the youth of America. Harold, the 'ex-ninja' fighter as the competitors started to call him, was never out of the lead. If it had a point or a sharp edge, Harold was throwing it with force AND accuracy. Harold is a natural as a knife thrower and is also an excellent golfer.

I wonder if there is a connection?

Terry Thissen, another golfer, who came for the fun and enjoyed the competition, garnered second place.

Ben Horvitz, a sixteen year old, who proved to be a real competitor who didn't give up no matter the odds, captured third place.

After the throwing we had a barbeque, which consisted of gourmet chili dogs and cheeseburgers followed by the award ceremony where we gave a first place, trophy and a custom made Lee Fugatt throwing implement called the "LEEZARD" to Harold Baker.

Terry took home the second place trophy and another Lee Fugatt throwing knife from Chuck Fogarty's private collection. Terry was also the winner of the raffle and won a mountain man throwing knife.

Ben Horvitz took home the third place trophy. Everyone took home a small camp flashlight in honor of the Chucker 2001.

Incidentally, I named the Chucker 2001 after one of the nice guys who goes through life and touches people with his kindness and generosity, Chuck Fogarty.

I look forward to the Chucker 2002 and sincerely hope that Chuck himself will be able to attend.

Happy throwing to all,

Life is GOOD!

Carl Geddes
San Diego, CA
