1. WHAT'S NEW

Hi everybody!

Hope you're all taking advantage of the warm weather as much as I am. Its been great here in WI lately. I found out my new target stand has one pretty major flaw in it...

One of my neighbors stopped over to try throwing some knives and axes at my new target set up. "You'll love it", I said. "It's a piece of cake!"

After a few throws with the axes she started sticking them pretty often. So after a few more minutes we switched to the knives.

I told her not to worry. Don't worry about not hitting the target or sticking it. Just make your first throw and we'll adjust from there.

Well her first throw went right behind the wooden fender and into the left tire :0 "psssssssss" was all I heard as the targets slowly began leaning to the left.

No biggie, because about 3 minutes later I popped the tire on the other side and straightened the whole thing out again :)

I have been throwing at the new target for a couple weeks and never once came even close to the tires or fenders. But now I had them both gone within 3 minutes... thats gotta be some kind of record!!!

I'm actually glad it happened. Now I can improve the design a little more. Pretty soon I'll have all the bugs worked and it'll be the greatest target stand around once again! Or atleast it will last a bit longer :)

To see the stand just follow this link:

THE BLADE THROWER FROM KOCH KNIVES NOW AVAILABLE We have a new throwing knife listed in the THROWZINI STORE. It is the first "blade-only" throwing design available here so we decided to call it...

you guessed it, "The Blade Thrower"!!!

It is 14.25" long and weighs approximately 15.6oz.

For more details and some great pictures just visit:

http://throwzini.com/jkoch_blade.html

Well, that's about it for now... Time to get outside and throw some knives :)

Hope everybody has a great 2 weeks!

Until next time...

NEW WEB POLL
Be sure to stop by and cast your vote in our new Web Poll. It's on the home page. Bottom right. Thanks!! (Results of our last Web Poll are listed below.)

PREVIOUS WEB POLL RESULTS
If I have a choice I would rather throw outdoors. But when the temperature gets down in the teens, its either move the range indoors or stop throwing for a few months.

And I'll take choice "A" thank you very much :)

Anyway, thanks to everyone who participated. The final results were as follows:

Where Do You Do Most of Your Throwing?

Indoors - 14.7%
Outdoors - 65.4%
Both - 19.9%

Total Voters: 305

These results weren't too surprising. Knife or tomahawk throwing is usually considered an outdoor sport. Unless you have to deal with Winter.

UPCOMING EVENTS
There is 1 event coming up in June and 2 EVENTS in July!

The 3rd Annual Hurlathon (aka The West Coast Master's Open), will be held June 15, 16, 17 2001 in Redding, CA. There will be knife, hawk and spear throwing events and even a few workshops.

Check out this link for more details:

2. GUEST COLUMN:

A GAME CALLED "KNIFE"
by Scott Gracia

Recently a friend of mine was over throwing knives. After throwing at the bullseye for about 5 minutes we both looked at each other and decided this was getting pretty boring, pretty fast.

We practice atleast 4 days a week for a couple hours each time. And no matter how much you love throwing, its gonna get boring if you don't mix up your practice sessions with some other throws or targets... or maybe even a game!

We both came up with a game called "KNIFE". It's almost exactly the same as a game called "HORSE" that we used to play when we were kids.

"Horse" is played with a basketball. Here is how the game works...

One guy tries to make a basket from a certain spot. If he does make it, then the other guy has to make the same exact shot from the same spot.

If he misses, then he gets a letter, like "H". The next miss you would get an "O", then an "R" etc. until the word "HORSE" is spelled out.

Its pretty much the same with our new game called "KNIFE". You can either call a certain number of turns, like 1/2 spin or 2 spins.

Or you can call a specific target. Like "the small bullseye on the bottom target," or "anywhere on the top target."

We usually play with 5 knives, but you can play with as many or as few as you like.

Let's say I call 2 spins into the 8" ring. Now I can use all 5 of my knives to try to throw 2 spins and stick one into the 8" ring. If I don't stick one in the target I called, then my turn is over and the next guy throws.

Now he can throw from wherever he wants and if he sticks his target, than I have to make it from where he called or I get a letter.

Here's one of our new rules... ("Special Rule #17" or something like that :)

Lets say I call the bullseye from 1 spin for my target. And let's also say I hit the bullseye with my second knife.

Now the next guy has to hit the target using only 2 knives or he gets the letter. If he happens to hit it on his first throw, then I would get the letter, because he did it with less throws than it took me.

Once you play a few games it gets pretty addictive, but its a great way to practice!

You can also play with your axes, tomahawks or spikes. All the same principles apply, except you may want to change the word to "AXE" or "HAWK" or "SPIKE" depending on what you're throwing :)

Hope you enjoy it!!!

4. PUTTING LESS SPIN ON YOUR THROWERS
by Robe Mone

The first reason you would want to put less spin on your knife is because you will get more control over your knife and getting the tip into your target.

If you want to put less spin on your thrower, you must first find a good thrower to work with before even trying to throw knives. Then try to find the balance point on your knife.

You can do this by holding the knife horizontally in the center until it balances without the tip or the butt of the knife closer to the ground.

Once you have found the balance point on the knife, hold the knife on the balance point between your thumb & middle finger. Place your index finger along the spine of the knife.

THROWING THE KNIFE
You can use any throwing form you want or are comfortable with, hold the knife as mentioned above and throw it without snapping your wrist upon release. Let the knife slide out of your hand and it should fly out very nicely.

I have used this type of throw from 5 meters before without any rotation and it flies very nicely to the target.

But one thing you must remember is that your hand shouldn't be falling below the flight of your knife, this tends to make the knife spin back on itself and the result is usually the handle hitting the target.

Remember "Practice Makes Perfect" :)
