1. WHAT'S NEW

Hello everybody!

Once again the weather hasn't been cooperating with my need to practice for the upcoming IKTA event. It's going to be here fast!

So far I've been able to practice 1/2 turns in my indoor range from 8 feet, but nothing further than that. And there are a few more throws I could really use some work on :)

Click on the EVENTS link on our home page and then on the IKTA link to find out the other distances and number of spins the contestants will be throwing.

There is also new info about the Tomahawk Event and the Distance Event!

http://www.throwzini.com

I've never really practiced throwing 1/2 turns until now. Every once in a while I'll throw one in just to break up the session, but I've never spent a decent amount of time practicing it...

(and I'm sure I will pay dearly when the Championships start :)

Another new challenge is throwing 5 knives instead of 3. Rules in the upcoming IKTA event state that you have to throw 5 knives at the target before retrieving any of them.

It may not seem like 2 more knives would make it that much more difficult, but it sure can.

Now I have to worry about hitting the knives already sticking in the target and knocking them out... I can see my points clanging to the ground :)

Seriously though, I do have a "slight" problem with side-arming when I throw. My knives are usually sticking into the target at an angle.

All it takes is one knife to be stuck at the wrong angle and you're in trouble! You could block the bullseye on your very first throw, now imagine trying to "sneak" 4 more knives around the first one!!!

This is a sure fire way to mess up a good grouping of knives! To be able to get a closer grouping of knives, all of your throwers should be aiming straight into the target, (and vertical with the grain).

John Bailey's knife throwing video has 2 techniques to help cure you of this problem. (Obviously I need to watch it again for a refresher course!)

Follow this link to find out what else this great video can teach you.

2. GUEST COLUMN:

THINGS NOT TO DO WITH YOUR NEW THROWING AXE
By Doug Allen

There it was, that long box under the Christmas tree. I new what it was. It was the only thing I asked Santa for...

A new Firestone ThrowingAxe!

As a Viking buff, I couldn't wait! This was the modern version of the Nordic Bearded Axe, used in both war and shipbuilding.

Well I was right, that's what it was, and I couldn't wait to throw it!

Now think back to when you were a kid, (I'm a grandfather now), when you got your first BB gun.

It was cold outside and Dad said you'll have to wait. You went down to the basement and figured who'd know if you popped off a few shots.

Three light bulbs and a window later you knew you were in deep trouble and you might not see the next sunrise.

Well, things are so different now :)

I went to the basement just to try it out, I wasn't going to throw much... RIGHT!!!

So anyway, here is a list of some of the things I've learned since I got my Firestone ThrowingAxe:

1) Don't throw in the basement unless you plan to put new insulation on your steam pipes.

2) Did you know you can split a 6X6 lolly column with one well placed throw???

3) I now know how brittle a sewage pipe is.

4) OK so now I've got this really cool looking axe, let's put some streamers and feathers on it!

But wait, now I have to see if it affects the flight... (You know I really did like my wifes cat.) I had no idea he could jump that high?

5) Finally my wife said enough is enough! Go outside, cold or not. And that's when I learned you don't throw at the moment your neighbor tells his dog to fetch.

The hound has a permanent grin now, and will never fetch a duck again.

6) Next I moved to the garage, I have a range set up there with heavier targets. But did I move my wifes car?

Nope. After all I was getting good and I had left the keys all the way in the house.

I'll replace the head light next week, but I don't know what to tell her about the four inch slash in the upholstery, (the window was open!).

7) About this time the grandsons show up. 6 year old twins. Now they know the safety rules, because I'm teaching them how to throw knives and darts.

I told them this was not an Indian tomahawk. I went inside to warm up. Not for long. I heard a "whoop" and ran out side to see Sebastian tied to a tree and Duncan doing a war dance!

I told my daughter not to worry... Sebastian's hair would grow back, eventually.

8) Well I learned my lesson. I bundled up and went for a walk in the woods.

How was I to know that long leaf yellow pine was endangered?

I tried to explain I wasn't trying to chop down the tree, just throw a battle axe at it. The forest ranger said that would reduce the fine to $1000...

...and then he took my cool axe.

OK it's almost all made up :) But I did get a Firestone ThrowingAxe for Christmas and it is fantastic!!!

While I didn't really wreak the havoc above, I did discover that it can split a 6" thick tree round with one well placed throw...

And there went my basement target.

It's snowing now and I'm sanding the nicks out of the handle. You know... suddenly everything looks like a target.

Here kitty, kitty :)

4. EVEN MORE EVERYDAY THROWING OBJECTS!
by Michael Gerety

I've been keeping busy with a new batch of javelin points I'm in the process of making.

As well as a bunch of small throwing spikes made from "recovered materials". In this case the spring steel stays from a patio umbrella.

I've found that these make great spikes of any length. Cut to size and heat and bend a small loop in the handle end and then turn the point.

Nifty and cheap. "There's treasure in them trash piles!"

These make great indoor throwers into foam or layered cardboard. I have a clear lane about two feet wide by eighteen feet long down the middle of my garage.

For a target there's one of my 3 inch thick foam 4'x8' sheets as a backer board and a smaller 2'x4' piece hung center mass.

This is good for spikes, Shuriken and my small knives. Also for my blowguns if I use the bamboo skewer darts.

The larger darts which are made from 10 inch bicycle spokes (again a trash pick) will go right thru 6 inches of dense foam and stick into my garage door!

Outside at 60 feet they go about a 1/4 inch out the other side of a piece of 3/4 inch plywood!

GAMES
This time of year it's game throwing.

"Tic tac toe" is fun and "Quarter, Nickel, Dime" is too. That's a game that we trace around the coins and use the circles as targets.

The one with the best tally after a flight is the winner.

Well, you stay warm and try some small indoor throwing to sharpen the eye and dream of spring throwing without the snow.

Happy chucking!
