WHAT'S NEW Hello everyone, We've got a couple new things to tell you about on our homepage so let's get to it! NEW WEB POLL Be sure to stop by and cast your vote in our newly updated Web Poll. It's right on the home page. Bottom right. Thanks!! (Results of our last Web Poll are listed below.) OTHER UPDATES When you visit the site you'll also notice a brand new QUICK IDEA and lots of great new posts on our Great Throwzini Discussion Forum! Be sure to check them out! http://www.throwzini.com PREVIOUS WEB POLL RESULTS I understand why the throwers under $10 are popular. It is easier to spend $20 on a couple knives than spending $80 when you're not even sure if you like the sport yet. The type of knife you buy should depend on what type of throwing you want to do. Indoor or outdoor, (from short or long distances). Anyway, thanks to everyone who participated. The final results were as follows: I am interested in throwers in the following price range... $ 0.00 - $9.99 - 31.0% $10.00 - $19.99 - 20.7% $20.00 - $29.99 - 29.3% $30.00 - $39.99 - 6.9% $40.00 + - 12.1% Total Voters: 378 I think once people have thrown for a while and see what a difference a heavy, quality knife makes, it won't hurt so much parting with that kind of money. Well, not as much at least :) A quality thrower can last a lifetime if taken care of properly. Just think of it as an investment! Scott Gracia sgracia@wi.rr.com http://www.throwzini.com Thanks again to everyone that submitted their info/pics!!! ======================================== 2. GUEST COLUMN THE ZEN OF THROWING by Dick Eadington I remember the feeling the first time I threw a cheap $12 knife at a piece of plywood in the garage and it stuck! I thought, "This is simple" ... Well, four hundred throws later and a lot of frustration later, I began to understand that there was not only technical skill and understanding involved, but also a state of mind. Those who throw darts, horseshoes, arrows, golf balls, etc., understand this place in the mindset. I will not discuss techniques of the physics of throwing here, but rather the mental state that can facilitate better and more consistent knives. We all know that there are many aspects to the techniques of throwing, and we all develop a "style" of some kind. I read a few books and began to "manufacture" my throws with reasonable success, but somehow they didn't seem really comfortable. Once in a while I would throw one that was just perfect! Yeah! Right! That's the one! Now just do it again. Not so easy, eh? What I discovered was that I was in a strange place when I experienced that "perfect throw." Somehow I wasn't thinking my way to the target...it just happened. It was like myself, the throw, the knife, the target, and the knife sticking, was all the same experience. I knew it was going to be a perfect knife before it even left my hand! I began to cultivate this abstract space in my mind where the perfect throw lived. It is not defined in terms of a construct of thought, but rather a place defined by itself... a place where I joined up with the experience. I find this mindset to come and go, depending on my ability to become detached from the experience. I found that the pressure of friendly competition, or the pressure of frustration or even anger, would make it disappear immediately. In a certain way, this concept makes knife throwing almost meditative. Ironic. I can throw for hours, sticking many knives by manufacturing the throws, but the sheer satisfaction of one of those perfect throw, beats them all! I encourage you to make note of when you throw one of those Zen knives, and try to cultivate the space where it happened. You can imagine my satisfaction when the knife sails through four rotations and forty some odd feet of air and "thunks" into a playing card at a perfect 90 degrees to the target. What a rush! That's one of the real neat things about throwing... it's like playing a musical instrument... you can enjoy whatever level of skill you have attained, and yet there will always be a challenge and room for improvement. You could be in one of the upcoming issues! Anyway, a few weeks ago I was searching the net for new throwing related sites and found one called, "Frontier Riders". I e-mailed them and asked a few questions about the "throwing act" they talk about on their site and this is the message I got in return: FRONTIER RIDERS My name is Thomi Hawk and I am the Knife thrower for the Frontier Riders. I do throw knives in my show more as a demo. Just like yourself I like to be honest, I'm by far not a great knife thrower but do like the sport and have had the privilege to be at the world knife throwing championships this year in Las Vegas. Also at the show was Che Che White Cloud, one of the best knife throwers to ever live, whom I enjoy a good friendship with. I use knife throwing as a demo along with the other skills I have. I also throw steel playing cards, oriental throwing rings, spikes, spears and tomahawks. (Tomahawks is what I really do and pride myself on.) I throw tomahawks one at a time, two at a time, one in each hand, from my knees, three at a time, blindfolded and I'm working on a flaming one as well. Also along with this show we keep in the time frame of the Wild West Shows of days gone by, like Buffalo Bill and the 101 shows and so many more that made the West famous. The Frontier Riders not only entertain but feel we are the keepers of the great western legacy, and try to pass on the good will and the code of the West to folks young and old alike. The Frontier Riders also have many skills from gun spinning, trick roping, whip cracking, trick shooting and stunt shows. We are very diverse and enjoy what we do, we are also Bi-Coastal with base's in Las Vegas, NV, and back East in New Jersey. I've enjoyed telling you about myself and the Frontier Riders, please feel free to contact me or the Frontier Riders front office at any time for anything we can help you with. Vaya Con Dios...
